Cooling system
I have a problem and not really sure why.
When the car isnt running the water in the header tank will be on the min line but when car is running the water
will rise to just above the max line?
The car isnt lossing any water at all, Heaters are warm but not hot dosent over heat but dont think its cooling as well as it should be?
Any ideas?
Was thinking it could be an air lock in the system?
Thanks russell.

That'd be my first thought too. Try giving your bottom pipe a squeeze with the top off the radiator.
Alternatively, you may just not have enough fluid in the system - as shown by it being lowish when cold. When it gets hot, it expands, therefore raising to the max line. Top up the expansion tank (when cold), start it up, squeeze the pipe as it's warming up, and see if the level drops in the header tank.

Thats what its supposed to do.
Its proper name is a expansion tank. When the engine is cold fill to max level. When it is at operating temperature it will rise above and go back down when cooling down.

Oh my God!
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

You know when you have a problem
Steam will erupt from under the bonnet , water will be coming out of the expansion tank even when fully done up. Thats when its over heated. Temperature guage will be up in the red by then....
Happened to me when my fan switch decided to pack in.

Mine does that...
In fact, the steam coming out from under the bonnet is my only method of judging running temps at the moment... temperature sender isn't connected, and my fan is broken

knuckles :Thats maybe your car calling out to you to fix it
10mm spanner replaces temp sender 2 mins work tops
I'm concentrating on the bigger issue of it needing a gearbox replacement right now
But yeah, it's something i really need to fix before FITP, I really don't want to get stuck in traffic without a temp gauge or a radiator fan.

frstben :Oh my god your car wont make it to FITP if you don't fix the fan and you wil need more than just a gear box
Agreed, unfortunately.

I'll get out and push the bloody thing if I have to. But yes; found a radiator fan now, only another hundred things on my list to fix before May
