FAO:Trackcar people - Harnesses

Postby Project_XR2i_Trackcar on Wed Dec 31, 2008 10:44 am

How have you got your harnesses fixed.

I have, until now, had my rear straps fitted to where the original rear belts went as per the photo below:

Image

Now i've had some sound advice and the setup above has been deemed as quite dangerous, to the point that in an impact it would cause serious injury, ie break my collar bones :o

(see this useful link also; http://www.schroth.com/installation-ins ... index.html)

Subsequently, I am in the process of fitting a dedicated harness bar to my trackcar before its next outing. I wasnt aware of the issues of my current setup and i doubt most of you are either.

Has anyone else any thoughts on this and what are your current configurations? Will you be changing it having seen this thread and the link posted above?

Ive not looked at the link but I know that the rear mounts should be as near horizontal as possible. If not then no more than 45deg from the horizontal point where it leaves the seat. The reason being that the resultant forces pull down on the seat possibly breaking it and also your shoulders!

I had Fusion make me an oversize strut brace along with plates that fit on the inner wings to strenghten it, my harnesses are mounted around it.

Thats what i plan on doing, either that or welded directly to cages node points slightly higher.

How much was yours out of interest, can i assume its bolted in?

Cant remember tbh, not a great deal. GIve Lee a ring r.e prices as he makes them to order. The gap between the arches differs from car to car so he makes them to your supplied dimensions. I specified mine was to mount harnesses so it is bolted in through the arch with another plate on the other side so it wont pull through in the event of a crash. Think the bolts are M10?

My rear strut brace is now situated on the top of the rear turrets and this allows the harnesses to be looped over and secured.

This leaves the belt at what can only be deemed a safe position to do there work in the worst of situations.

The rear strut brace is literally a section of roll cage tube purchased from Merlin motorsport.
This has been cut to length and tapped into place then welded.

Pic below of the bar in question, please note the harnesses have not been attached and are just dangling on the floor.

My trackcar had the same setup as yours Projectxr2i and it was was also pointed out to me that it was unsafe. The cage thats in now has the rear bar bracing the rear struts, as above. Paul has some harnesses suitable so these will be fitted for this years trackdays. :)

I hope its a custom weld in one mate, the one in my pic is no where near suitable. too much flex.

Yes at the moment its on a chocolate omp one but soon to be replaced with a proper weld in one.

The thought is there for now though

I would. I wouldnt wear that belt with it attached where it is now though. probably worse than the lower ones.

Also, I've just noticed that all this time my brace could have been upside down anyway.

The optimum position is pretty much were Luke has his. It not only needs to be at a certain angle/height in relation to the shoulders but also straight back (180 deg ??).

If you are using this car as a daily runner and you have to drive it then i would suggest you fix them to the lower fixing points, under where the bench was. It's not ideal but it must be better than having them off centre from the shoulders.

The thing i don't get is:

Luca has a bar running along the exact same place, where jonboisxr2i's rear strut brace is, so why can't the harnesses just be attached to that?

In a crash the bolt in OMP wont be strong enough to handle the force of the harnesses being moved whereas a weld in brace would be
