CANCELLED GB - Quaife Quick Rack
Right, this first post has been edited to keep things simple (hopefully)
To date, I've had some interest and we've had a rack sent to Quaife which has been stripped and assessed. The finished product will provide a 2.75 lock to lock and will be supplied in kit form only (factory fitted is an option but at an extra cost and you must supply them with a rack before hand).
Quaife have given me the following prices for a kit only . Delivery will be extra and all kits will be delivered to one address (likely to be mine) then posted on, collected or given to the individuals at a show or similar thereafter:
10 people = £150 + VAT so £172.50
20 people = £125 + VAT so £143.75
30 people = £105 + VAT so £120.75[/size]
I'm gonna assume for now that we will probably only get 10 so lets call it £172.50 per kit.
If you are 100% committed then you need to PM me your real name and contact details (E-mail & Mob). I will populate a list below and once we have 10 i will PM you with payment instructions. Then I will need you to submit either a 25% deposit (£43.13) or, the amount in full to an account in my name and I will pay Quaife a deposit to get the builds started (their terms, not mine). Final payment will have to be made (again, same account if you havent already, then i pay in full) prior to Quaife shipping the kits.
We now have 11 people confirmed and their deposits paid, I will be calling Quaife in the next few days to pay the deposit (£474.43).

On a final note, all i am gaining from this is a quick ratio rack for my trackcar, same price as everyone else.
BAD NEWS GUYS
Guys, please see the e-mail i have just today received from Quaife.
This is not a wind up, I am truely gutted as i've put a lot of work into this but as you can see for yourselves this is a definite show stopper which is well out of my hands
I will reply and ask for the funds to be re-imbursed to my card and set about making refunds once they reach my account. Paypal is the easiest option for me as i am currently in Cyprus then Germany until at least mid August.
Sorry Guys.

Guys, please see the e-mail i have just today received from Quaife.
quaife :Its bad news Chris, we have a problem. We are trying to get the rack designed but have a problem that cannot be overcome. The pinion we need to make to achieve a ratio of around 2.75 would need to be of a size not compatible with the standard rack housing. The option of machining the rack housing to accommodate the size of pinion required is not available as this would not give enough strength in the housing to support the stresses and strains of the steering.
The only option is to say, sorry the project is not going to work, and give you back a full refund there will obviously be no charge for the work we have carried out so far.
Please get back to me Chris, and tell me how you wish the refund to be done.
Len
Kind regards

Don't know. I'm assuming it's a complete rack. A standard recon rack is 50-60 quid so i would hope so.

Re: GROUP BUY - Quaife Quick Rack
in the old post in tuning/handling/ braking
i found this
"Right I spoke to Scott at Quaife today. He says that they don't make one for the Mk3, but if there is 10 people that want them they will make a kit too suit.
I explained that 10 might be alot to ask for. So his alternative was that if there is 5 then they would still be able to make a kit too suit. The only difference being was that the price would be a little dearer."
so it looks like it will just be a kit... at 120 it wouldn't be a rack... they would have to fabricate a whole rack from scratch that would cost alot more than 120 per rack
120 for internals is about right

Yeah - £120 seems cheap for a whole rack. I assume it's £120 on an exchange basis?

Re: GROUP BUY - Quaife Quick Rack
Guys, I really dont know as yet.
I'm waiting out on Quaife getting back to me. I will be asking for a full rack when they do. I certainly dont want to be pulling mine appart. Its only 50 quid for a std recon one so i cant see it being mega ££££'s for one with a shorter rack.
I just want interest for now, for a full rack. If its more than 120 quid them time will tell and we will see who is still interested by that time.

Re: GROUP BUY - Quaife Quick Rack
Its not just for turbo's. Mine isnt a turbo, in fact the turbo has nothing to do with it.
The term 'quick rack' refers to the steering rack. pretty much all racing / rally cars have a quick rack steering rack. It gives you a lower ratio of turns on the steering wheel to the wheels. ie, 1 turn on the steering wheel will give you full lock as an example.
Get my drift?

Re: GROUP BUY - Quaife Quick Rack
might be interested, but ill need to know a bit more about it.
the FRST came as standard with a quick rack, and was the only fiesta in the mk3/3.5 range to be fitted with such rack, so could you find out what the lock to lock will be (frst is 3.75) and also, if the part there be putting in will be servicable, i.e if i need a replacment bit year down the line if i can get one or not.

i'm also interested, especially looking at fords prices for a new rack,
i'm undecided what to do about my current setup, as at the moment i have PAS
but i like the thought of having more room in the engine bay, so this idea could be the answer!!

Re: GROUP BUY - Quaife Quick Rack
Guys,
I've had a reply from Quaife:
My reply:
So clearly, I need to ask....
Does anyone have a spare rack to hand that can be sent to Quaife ????? I'm hoping that Q7 will come back with a +ive answer for the peep that can
I've had a reply from Quaife:
Peter Drake from Quaife :Dear Chris,
If possible, would you be able to send us a sample?
We do not foresee a problem with designing and manufacturing a quick steering rack for the Mk3 Ford Fiesta.
We require a single minimum order of 10 units.
Upon receiving a sample we will be able to give you a quotation.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Peter Drake
My reply:
I :
Hi Peter
Thanks for your reply
I can't see a donor rack being a problem, I will ask the guys if anyone has one surplus they can donate, if not i will see if i can pick one up myself. I have about 10 people showing interest already, i expect that figure to fluctuate +/- though once i get a final price / more detail
A couple of questions that have been asked already that you maybe able to help me out with:
1. Would the final purchase be for a kit only or the whole rack? (I'm assuming from your reply that as you need a rack to make one up it will be in a kit form or, will you able to fit the kit on receipt of an exchange rack).
2. If kit, would you be able to fit it to their racks at the factory? If so, would there be a fee or will it be included in the kit price? As per Q1. Would you be able to do supply the rack complete on an exchange basis?
3. Would you be able to cater for power assisted racks? (Or can i rightly assume here that your gonna need a PAS rack again to make a kit up)
4. What would the lock to lock be roughly? an RS Turbo for example is 3.75 turns and is notably shorter than other models.
5. If it's a kit, will the customers be able to buy replacement parts later on? Will the kit be guaranteed?
6. I appreciate you need a donor rack to make the proto-type but is there any chance of a ball-park figure to sweeten the guys appetite?
7. (from myself) For whoever supplies the supply a donor rack, would it be possible to receive the finished product back in the rack as supplied or could you offer a discount on the finished kit?
Kind Regards
Chris

I have a near new FRST rack in my garage, somewhere
I got a few hours spare tomorrow so I will hunt it out.
Do I get a discount for supplying said rack then ???
More importantly do I get it back, as Gen. Ford ones are rare now ?
