MotorcyclesFish :So, almost a year on it's proven that I wasn't imagining things - the Haynes museum has one of the prototype 1.2 3cyl 2T fiestas on display, in near mint condition. Info reveals it was powered by an Orbital developed engine and was actually capable of passing the then-current emissions legislation.

I've been looking at this some more and I'm a bit puzzled; the connector design and especially that alternator seem to be post-Mk3 era, do we have a date for this?

1992, as verified by pics I have here of the prototypes on J-plates. :)
My name is Alex. I used to have a Capri. I don't anymore. But I'm still called Capri.

Cheers, that's interesting. There must be a long take-to-market time with some of that stuff. The Alternator and connectors weren't used until the Mk4 Fiesta :)

Capri :
1989 Fiesta III Diesel. Experimental 2-Stroke

Is it definitely a diesel? I was given to believe that diesel 2-strokes typically (although by no means definitively) operate a poppet valve exhaust and I can see no cam driving gear, which would indicate to me that this is a petrol item? Furthermore, those 3 items on the front look a lot like coil-on-plug setups. Also, I thought a direct injection 2-stroke is meant to be used to allow a sump bottom end without the need for total loss lubrication? Perhaps this is an intermediary step with EFI regulating mixture only, rather than a true injection-to-combustion-chamber direct injection (ref. Aprilia Ditech). I suppose that diesel fuel would be a better lubricator of the bottom end than petrol though!

I may be wildly off the mark; it has been known, but some things don't seem right here.

Mark: If the engine was produced as a package by Orbital as suggested, connectors would not be Ford Europe items? Speaking of connectors, big lols at the choccy blocks to the nearside of the alternator.

Alex: Good info mate.

Afraid not; cameras aren't allowed in Dunton, and the cars have already been crushed.

I agree, it's a petrol engine for sure.

RE: Connectors. The engine would be supplied by Orbital but no doubt it's fitted to the chassis in Dunton. I've seen all sorts of prototypes in the workshops on my lunch hour. That Alt is a 1.25 Zetec Mk4 Fiesta item and so are the connectors. Ford parts bin stuff :)

Sadly, all of the prototypes do. It's for both legal and cost reasons. In a lot of cases it's actually cheaper to scrap/dispose of the car rather then break it down.

A lot of the less radical prototypes do get broken, and end up stripped by a company called 'Environ'. These tend to be pretty standard cars with trim or engine calibration changes.

Chaps I've found a little more info on the 2-stroke. It's in a book at work (Ford). I'll scan it if anyones interested.

The Engine is the Ford 'KHD'.
