Update
Not a happy heeman :(
Bitter-sweet update. I finally got round to taking some pics for my agreed valuation, here are a few:
Then came the bitter part of this update...sorting that rust bubble that was knocked off on Saturday As much as it was the fault of the lad I allowed to detail my car, I can't blame the rust's presence on him, so tonight, I got to work on it.
This is how it looked, without its protective red bubble that was still covering it till Saturday:
Carefully hacked off with a screwdriver It felt like I was stabbing my pet labrador with a fork or something, I'm so attached to this car!
Then on with the rough sanding:
And this is how I left it tonight:
The panel looks far worse in the pics than it does in the flesh - something to do with using a Halogen light and phone camera! The Kurust I applied in 2003 did its job pretty darn well, and rough sanding will take the majority of the pitting out. The final bits will be rust treated with gel, then metal filler applied, followed by body filler to match the original panel shapes.
A friend of my dad's has kindly offered to prime and spray it, and blend it into the door shut and rear quarter, on top of my prep work. I say "kindly" because most bodyshops won't spray on anything but their own prep work, but hopefully my prepping is of a high enough standard for him to work with it straight away, though it'll cost me between £100 and £200 for the privilege
More sanding tomorrow, followed by rust treatment, filling and final prep work.

Miraculously, the rust has largely been contained towards the surface! It has pitted a bit, as you can see, but is far from going right through, which I wasn't expecting at first, but it has been there a few years now.
I'm really quite tempted to get a set of wheels painted that colour now, looks mint doesn't it?! Not quite the same in the flesh, but it's amazing what pics open your eyes up to

Looks Awesome!
Honestly mate.. get some advice off here about doing it yourself.. My girlfriend hit a post and her boumper cracked.. I fixed the crack.. filled and smoothed and resprayed and you couldnt tell it had been done... You did an amazing job on the front bumper so I'm sure you can make it look mint until respray time

The bumper's one thing, it's a whole body part. Trying to a) get a paint mixed well by someone and tinned and b) blend it in with the rest of the panel with no lines to spray up to is an entirely different ball game. Lack of equipment and experience would make it hard to have it looking good. Who knows, with this issue solved maybe I'll leave it ANOTHER year till a respray! Bloody hope not, I'll just have to give up driving it for a couple of months and get it done some time!

James, don't panic, that rust bubble is nothing, it's smoothed out well. Prep it properly and be patient between coats and you'll never notice one it's sorted. Your paint is still pretty fresh, so I can't see to many problems with blending. I've owned two Nova's and they love rust (even when I had a respray on one) so me and paint get on well
I have a patch on my tailgate like that, about half the size. I'm going to attack it on Friday with the sandpaper.
Keep up the good work. And James, you've seen the car with no polish- I'd have melted retina's all over the show if I polished it

eeee, great stuff. It's not half as bad as it looked in the previous set of pics! As you're doing properly I'll say that Kurust doesn't really work over time, this will hurt you more but you need to take a grinder to it and remove every last pit, until it's all nice clean metal

I've been grinding bits out today, have just put a layer of Kurust gel over it to see how it comes up, that should give me a clearer look at it. This isn't necessarily a permanent job I'm doing, that will come at a later date, so I don't want to grind and grind till it goes through. Most of it's coming back shiny without removing much at all, so I'll see how it looks when I take the gel off shortly. Thanks

Why? I can do, while I'm waiting for this gel to work, but why do you need to see? The previous owner (of the wheels) allowed his girlfriend to drive his car the day before he took the wheels off, and naturally kerbed one of them It's not hideous, but it detracts from the overall look. There are one or two other marks, and the odd bit of slight surface roughness towards the inside of the wheel which means brake dust can't be fully cleaned off.

Looking good James! I knew you'd be the same as me and want all the shabby bits done for FITP! I'm still waiting for enough sponds to get the MANJ into the body shop but I will make sure the rusty bits are done by May (fingers crossed!)
You're right though mate our cars are just TOO similar to park next to each other

Exterior differences:
Wheels - you have Cosworth 16s, I have Escort 15s
Spoilers - you have a red FRST spoiler, I have a black RS accessory spoiler
Bumpers - mine will both be smoothed by then, plus cooler cutout
Repeaters - yours are oval, mine square
Rear lights - mine are RS accessory replicas, yours standard
Umm...rear windows - you have different stickers
See? They're completely different! I do like your car a lot though And I'm not sorting this rust "because it's show season", it wasn't my choice at all!

Ok they're similar then!
I know where you're coming from with the bodywork mate, I've left my sills for too long now and while the car still went through its MOT ok I don't want them getting beyond repair after all the conversion work I did elsewhere on the car
Yours should look cool with smoothed bumpers etc, can't wait to see pics.

Lookin veeeeery shiney after the detailing! Shame about the rust, but at least the filler area looks solid. Always the downside to most clean looking cars.

Jimmy your mirror is hanging off !
Its amazing how that rust patch has formed all because someone slammed the seat belt into it years ago.
Still you should be a happy heeman because it didn't rust though to make a nice storage hole
You will need to match the paint perfectly to get that to blend in to original radiant red , Good luck.
That is all

I hope that's a joke! And LOL at the storage space comment! It's Radiant Red -> solid red, so hopefully the bodyshop man will find it a breeze
Mark - Hopefully, just want it back and shiny
Ghost - Least my issues can be filled and painted over!
