Another thousand mile weekend passed without serious incident. I did slip in the flooded wet roads and had a small encounter with a hedge, but no damage.

Had a rolling road day today with Kent Modified, Bark Mennett came along too with some very impressive power figures!

I made 156.4BHP. Up from a potential standard of 147, however, standard ST's have been tested as low as 140, due to the standard map. They over fuel loads from the factory which saps the power higher up the rev range. Peak power is at 5500rpm at which point it flattens off. The AFR is 10:1 which for peak performance needs to be closer to 13:1. The operator reckons that with a Bluefin map that should even out the AFR and bring a bit more power, combined with the current mods around 10bhp extra.

Still, I'm very pleased with the result, for an exhaust (with the standard restrictive flexi) and an air filter a 9.6bhp increase (perhaps slightly more) over standard isn't bad going really!

It also means that me keeping on the power after 5500rpm in its current state is pointless lol.

Remember the peak rpm for combe. Bluefin are pretty cheap now, compared to how much they used to be anyway. They were £200 a month ago. They can also change the map for the mods you have, worth knowing.

oh and FYI a perfect air fuel ratio is 14 parts air to 1 part fuel (but its virtually unachievable without laboratory conditions)

I disagree, Nick - it's not pointless revving beyond 5.5k because you don't want to keep dropping too far below your peak power when you change up, you want to be revving high enough that your next gear is still well into the power band or you'll just bog down. I guarantee if you drove your 0-60 without going above 5.5k you would probably have struggled to get anything below 9s :)

And Jony, 14:1 would probably be far too lean for ultimate power - roughly 13:1 is probably more ideal in a naturally aspirated car, but then there are so many factors to take into consideration! It's not difficult to achieve any particular AFR, the problem is cylinder temperatures and resisting knock while trying to keep ideal ignition timing. The cylinder's mixing efficiency, ability to resist knock, compression ratio and flow will all affect this!

The 'perfect' mixture 14.7 to 1. Anything less than that is considered a rich mixture and anything more is consisdered a lean one. But of course you cannot achieve that in the real world and that's really only scientific values with perfect conditions. But as Smo and Nick said, the more ideal mixture for an NA car is 13:1. Most cars will run at that, especially at higher RPM's to make the car as reliable as possible.

Why do these engines run so rich then? Is it to account for s**t fuel or something?

As far as I'm aware they've been restricted so much to keep them insurance friendly from new, hence why things like a cone filter and flexi pipe can release 10-15bhp straight out of the box.

If it turns out that installing a less restrictive manifold/flexi pipe, 60mm throttle body, and bluefin can affect the AFR that alone could get it up to 165bhp!

With a new inlet and cams, with a decent remap it could see anything from 180-190 without turbo/super charging.



That's how complicated and restrictive the standard air intake is.

Its as good as any pic at the moment. I've installed my new tow strap. It's actually bolted to the towing eye bolt so is technically fully functional (although could flex the bumper if its actually used).

In fact, a parking attendant was so impressed with that and my exemplary parallel parking he took a photo of my car and left a note on the windscreen telling me that 'parking fine'. It's not my best bit of parking I must say, but it must be good enough to be warranted 'fine' by a warden
