My Mondeo TDI engine conversion in pics

Postby heeman10 on Mon Apr 19, 2004 7:32 pm

As a few know, my 1.8 diesel was treated to a Mondeo 1.8 Endura DE TDI engine out of a 2000 Mondeo TD LX at the weekend. Excursion is the man at whom to direct all your admiration/abuse :D He fitted it all into his Mk3.5 a short while ago, and I purchased the entire setup and fitted it down at his. We thought it was a 5 hour job, sadly it was 17

The beginning. My car on the right, his on the left, we set to it, stripping everything stopping the engines being removed. Lovely sunny day!

My engine coming out:

My old engine at the back, Mondeo engine at the front:

Full de-catted Si exhaust system mated to the Mondeo downpipe (bye bye gay chrome tail pipe trim!!! :D)

The piece of valance I had to saw away to fit the intercooler:

Cooler in place:

The small strip marked out to be trimmed (by Mark's very helpful dad while I scoffed a burger!) to accept the cooler:

The finished product:

Another view of the front with the bonnet open:

And a quick shot from above:

Mark had an incident with a breeze block on the A1 which tore a boost hose. I duct taped and jubilee-clipped it up, but it's still losing a fair amount of boost pressure and over-fuelling as a result. I have a replacement hose arriving tomorrow/Wednesday which will give me full boost (if it fits!). I can't say how happy I am with it, pulls very well in any gear even with half boost, almost savage in second.

Huge thanks to Mark, specially for letting me stay. The finished product is great, an almost factory fit in my opinion. Bring on full boost! :D

87bhp @ 4500rpm & 131lb/ft @ 2000rpm - will really push you in your seat when pulling away!

You need to get some video clips done or something... I dunno why it facinates me so much... Just different I guess!

Those power figures are compared to the old Fiesta 1.8 Diesel engines:

60bhp @ 4800rpm & 81lb/ft @ 2500rpm.

So nearly 1.5 times as much bhp and nearly 1.7 times as much torque!

That's a great increase in power for not too much money I'd imagine!

Cheers,

Liebo - Was about £750, and insurance went up by £179.

Wilson123 - Rich, it's still diesel, and chugs a bit louder than the original at is happens! I don't care with this performance :)

andyhardy and others - The Mondeo got about 90bhp out of this engine. However with the K&N, de-cat and larger exhaust bore, and a big front-mounted intercooler as opposed to a small, top-mounted cooler stuffed under the bonnet (those who know their charge-cooling theory will appreciate the gains made there) I think it's got to be around 110bhp on full boost, give or take 5 or 10bhp. I'm looking to increase boost and fuelling in the future, so who knows, a 150bhp TDI Fiesta Mk3? :bonkers: The 1.8 N/A diesel was quoted to have around 60bhp, which would translate in reality to around 50bhp, so I've got at least double the power, and a hell of a lot more torque. IF I can make it to FITP I'll gladly demonstrate to anyone who's interested :)

Going home today, so if my boost hose has turned up and will fit, I'll put it on today/tomorrow.

Cheers for the replies :) Glad there aren't too many people out there laughing at it!

Well I'm going to have to see what time's like. I have a lot of deadlines, exams and tests coming up at uni. My Fiesta is a one-hour drive away at home, and Kettering is a long long drive for me from the North! I'll see nearer the time, I'd really love to go :) Car would be filthy after all those miles tho! Cheers for that Max :)

andyhardy - I must say I'm very pleased you can appreciate what I now have with this engine, when you have much more power at your disposal. Always nice when people can keep a realistic view and keep things in perspective when they up their power :)

I appreciate good and useful work when I see it - I've spent probably 10 to 20 times as much on yours and it's giving near the percentage increase of power.

Again, good stuff mate, can't wait for you to show us how it goes!

Dude,
My dad lives in Northampton, the city next to Kettering.

You can come down mine, then go down in a mini cruise. It's about an hour and 15 mins to Kettering from mine.

You can come the night before prolly, and then have a fresh drive in the morning, same on the way back if you want.

Cheers for that Liam :) I checked the map last night and saw that Loughborough is maybe only aboutr 30 miles from Kettering! It's North of Kettering too, so I'm thinking of going down and staying in my old uni house on Saturday then turning up on Sunday. Thanks a lot for the offer tho :D My dad's doing a hillclimb on Saturday, so it's gonna be a lonnnng Saturday if I can make it! *Fingers crossed*

Mikee_RS - Cheers :) Hope the turbo's coming along ;)
