1,4 Efi Turbo / Update 08.04.2006 - 0,5Bar BOOOST!
Hi!
Since my ZT project moving too slow I decided to put Megasquirt, turbo, intercooler, ect. that I have on my current engine 1 400 cc CVH CFi.
Haynes says that C/R is 8,5:1 and we measure head just to confirm.
Started the day like this:
And finished like this:
Head need some work to align EFi manifold, but ERST exhaust manifold fits (like T3 conversion on FRST).
Still don't have correct fuel pump but I have LPG conversion previously fited and will use it untill my pump arrive.
I have a lot of pics, but need to resize them...

knuckles :Wont the turbo be a bit too powerful for a 1.4 cvh ?
Ive been told you simply cant put a turbo on my 1.6 cvh xr2i.
Depends what the turbo is I guess. If it's a T3 straight from an Escort Turbo it should be ok. I think the R5 GTT used a T3 on a 1.4?
Also, he says the compression ratio of the 1.4 CVH CFi is 8.5, which is much lower and nearer that of a standard FRST compared to your XR2i... So probably a lot safer to do it with
Also just about everything else should bolt up and plug in, so seems an ideal engine to have a play with
Get some more done!

Thanks guys!
Turbo is ERST T3. I hope it will spools fast enough
Not much work done today - just few valve seats are regrounded and valves are cleaned. Inlet valves are slightly polished.

Here we go!
Head is rebuild - valves seat are regrounded, new oil seals. And head is modifed for EFi inlet maniofld
Hopefully engine will start tommorow if I sort my turbo watercooling (take a look at my post in General Discussion).

Great work dude, glad to see you've tried something like this! We all know that lots of small capcity turbo cars shift! Don't let negative posts discourage you!
Will you be running standard cams?

Thanks guys!
This time no pics. My camera is out of control!
Engine is fully build, manifolds, turbo, ect. Still have to connect all air and water pipes - I'm short of 90 degree bends . Also have a problem with fitting 2WD Cosworth intercooler - need to move radiator 10 cm. lower and fit cooler between rad and upper front panel (it's Orion not Fiesta!). Tomorrow I hope to sort downpipe and coolant hoses.
Yes, I'll use standard camshaft. I have 1.6 camshaft (and head with valves and ect.), but as far as I know 1.6 cam have bigger valvelift and duration - that can lead to valves hitting pistons

Car is alive! On LPG!
No intercooler yet, no radiator fan, no downpipe!
Turbo spools up at 3000-3100 RPM, @4000RPM - 0,5-0,6 Bar (~8 Psi).
Still can't go over 4500RPM cause high inlet temperatures due to lack of IC.
More work needed...

You've been revving it to 4,000rpm with no downpipe? You must be totally deaf now! Good work so far, fun project! I hope you can move the radiator down ok, or find a shorter one from somewhere

Here are some details:
Еxcept modding of head to align EFi inlet manifold no other changes needed.
Then you need to place intercooler somewhere (it's harder than I excepted), run water hoses, boost pipes.
Water cooling of turbo we done like this:
Still no oil and water leaks , water temperature is fine even without radiator fan-need sorting ASAP. But manifold air temperatures getting very high when even little boost is produced (+15 C° for 2 sec.!!!). Thats why mounting of intercooler is first thing to do when I have enough time.
Car runs on LPG - still waiting for my fuel pressure regulator, cause EFi manifold that I have come without one. Then new upgraded fuel pump must be fitted in order to run car on petrol.
Due to lack of intercooler and using LPG, we gets really loud BANGs in inlet manifold, boost pipes come off, ect.
Car runs 2 nights (we drive it only at night, on private road) WITHOUT ANY ignition correction. When ECU is disconnected EDIS module runs ignition fixed at 10° BTDC.
Last night I got my Megasquirt and engine harnes sorted, so I got couple of logs. Megasquirt control just ignition for now (based on engine RPM, MAT, CLT and MAP), that's why I didn't connect my TPS yet.
Running car without downpipe is fun , but that mean I can't use my wideband lambda sensor so see what AFR's we use... Downpipe is next thing to do!
Here is a screenshot of datalog of last night, showing only RPM, MAP, MAT and CLT:
