[Guide] Fitting aftermarket gearbox mounts
Well, after pretty much completing the 2.0 16v conversion in my 2i 8v i'm still not happy with how much engine movement there is, especially as the cars main role is for track use. I've tried sourcing the complete front engine mount but with no luck.
So, to that end, after the usual questions and reading up using search i have decided to fit some aftermarket gearbox mounts.
Tools required (so far) are as follows:
Trolley Jack
Axle stands (min x2)
Socket set to include 15, 17, 18 and 19 mm
Spanners 17 & 19 mm
Day 1 - removal of OEM mounts
First off i started with getting the car up on the axle stands. I have the novelty of having 4, but a minimum of 2 are required.
Then i positioned the trolley jack under the gearbox as shown in order to support the weight once the cradle was removed.
With my particular model i needed to remove the lower strut brace in order to get a better access to the cradle bolts. This is simply removed by undoing the 4 bolts (2 each side)
Once this is off you need to remove the nuts to the mounts themselves (15mm socket) (left hand nut in next pic).
Then undo the 4 cradle bolts
2 front
2 rear
and remove the cradle, as you can see mine was pretty minging.....
....so i've taken some time to clean it up. An old chisel, some gunk, paintbrush and a rag and it looks like new now. Should shed a few punds of weight for track too
Then remove the mounts themselves. for this you will need to use a 17 mm spanner.
Note to self - clean shyte from gearbox !
An hey presto, here are the old mounts. they look ok to be honest, was expecting them to be knackered. Hope the aftermarket ones make a difference.
Now i have to wait for delivery of the 'vibra technic' gearbox mounts which should be with me tomorrow.
Time taken so far, including cleaning the cradle is about 30 mins.
to be continued.......

day 2
The gearbox mounts arrived today as expected, so i'm pretty chuffed with amber performance.
Here you can see the difference between the vibra technic and the OEM mounts. As you would expect the vibra technic mount makes the OEM mount feel like jelly.
I wasnt sure which way to put them around at first, so after a quick question in general it was deemed appropriate to put them on this way round.
Fitment is pretty much the reversal of removal but with some adjustment on the jack here and there as explained below......
First off you need to attach the mounts to the gearbox then offer up the cradle.
you'll noticed i've given the box a bit of a clean. should shed a few more pounds
At first i found that the cradle wouldnt fit in place. it seemed as though something wasnt right. then i realised i had to lower the box, fit the cradle loosely to the mounts then raise slightly and fit the rear 2 cradle bolts.
once they're tight, raise the box as required and fit the front 2 cradle bolts.
Then tighten everything. no idea of the correct torque settings so i just did it all FT .
All done.
Obviously dont forget to refit the lower strut brace.
Havent driven it yet, but i did fire it up and give it some revs. engine doesnt move so well chuffed. highly recommended.
Hope this helps.

don't know about internal vibration yet. havent driven it with them as yet. not bothered anyway as its a trackcar so it drives hard, loud and bumpy anyway .
