Guide to fitting e/w's for a 3-door mk3 Fiesta inc. PICS!
Guide to fitting electric windows:
This guide tells you how to fit electric windows from an xr2i onto any 3-door mk3 fiesta.
I decided to write this guide because all the people I asked for advice had no idea at all! So now that I've finally worked it out here it is-
Fitting the electric mechanism:
· Take off the door card and handles etc. This just involves taking out screws, and the only tricky bit is the original manual window winder, there is a clip on the back of the window winder between the plastic circular thing (pic's later), which jus needs to be prized off and then the window winder just pulls off.
· Now you have to drill out the old rivets....simply drill them until they fall out (worked for me). There should be 4 rivets on the window rack....2 at the top and 2 at the bottom....and there should be 2 either side of the manual winder mechanism.
· Detach the window from the mechanism (two screws on bottom of window).
For the next step I left my window in the door....but you might feel safer if you take it out.
· Now find a way to take the whole thing out....window rack and winder mechanism etc. It's a bit fiddly but it is possible!
· Insert the new electric mechanism and rack etc. (again its fiddly but possible!). On my doors the holes for the screws on the motor etc. were already there.....I'm not sure if this is always the case. Simply bolt the motor mechanism into place with the provide bolts and nuts (the bolts should already be attached onto the motor bracket).
· Now you have two options- you can either do what I did and find some nuts and bolts which fit through the holes where the rivets were and bolt the window rack thing onto the door with those.....or put new rivets in. Nuts and bolts worked fine for me.
· Now you need to fix the window onto the new window rack thingy....this simply screws back into place.....all holes should align as they did on the original manual mechanism.
· Thats basically the mechanism fitted. I left my door card etc. off the door until I'd tested the wiring and checked it worked.
Wiring the electric windows:
I will now tell you how to wire up 1 of the electric windows and the same method applies for the other side.
· Hopefully you will have the other side of the plug which attaches onto the side of the motor.
From this there will be 1 blue and 1 green wire. Feed these through the door loom (if you manage to get them through the original rubber grommet thing.....well done!).
· On the back of the switch there are 5 pins....
...again I hope you have the plug which attaches to the back of this! From this there are now 5 wires:
2 Brown- earth
1 Black and Yellow- live
1 Blue- attach to blue wire from motor
1 Green- attach to green wire from motor
Ok ok...on this switch the wires are coloured...2brown, 1 yellow and black, and one blue and yellow, and one green and yellow. Same principle jus with added yellow stripes on the blue and green wires!
· And thats basically it....connect the wires like above and you should find that the window works perfectly!
· I took a separate live directly from the battery and used 2 inline fuses....1 by the battery and 1 by the center console inside my car....from this power source I run my central locking boot release and electric windows....I found that the windows only worked with a fuse no lower than 15A, so thats what I'm using at present.
Hope this helps!
Any problems please ask....pictures will be uploaded soon.

on later models (newer switches) its the exact same but, you have 2 more wires, another brown (pin4) and a grey yellow (pin5), they are simply for illumination! and the switchs and multiplugs are different design.
fitment (mechanically) is exactly the same as above
there are 2 ways to wire them.
1: a switch on each side ie 1 for passenger, 1 for driver
OR
2: a switch on the passenger side and 2 switches on the driver side, 1 for each window
its only the driver side (on later models and both multiplugs from that side) that uses the above wiring colour codes
on the multiplug for the switches, it gives you pin numbers beside each wire. these are the pin numbers and connections required for both wiring options. these are for the passenger side, but follow the above wiring colours etc for the drivers side
................. (single passenger switch )
1- blue/y.......... to motor
2- bk/y............ live
3- grn/y......... earth
4- br........ earth
5- gr/y........ illumination live
6- blu/y......... earth
7- grn/y ....... to motor
..................... (connections to second passenger switch on drivers side)
1- blue/y......... to blu/y on passenger switch (pin4)
2- bk/y........... live
3- br.............. earth
4- br.............. earth
5- gr/y........... illumination live
6- br.............. earth
7- grn/y ........ to grn/y on passenger switch (pin3)
NB do not earth pin 3 and 4 on passenger side if you want to connect the second switch to it.

They are a right pain mate! Took ages to drill them out. (Mind you, for the first 5 or 10 mins I didn't realize I was using a wood drill bit )

Mine was from a fiesta mate and fitted easy as all the holes are already there. It was literally drill out old rivets, take out manual window runner, put in electric runner, bolt in and wire up. Job done.
Taken me a year to get off my arse and fit them!

As far as i know,
Fiesta Ghia's had them, Xr2i's, RS Turbo's, RS1800's and the Si had them but it depends what door cards you are using, as i think it was the Si who had the switch on the doors instead of the centre console?
There is plenty of online scrappies mate who offered me them for about £30 or so, but make sure you get the wiring looms and the plug that connects to the back of the switch, as Ford wanted £30 for this alone per side!!
As for the rivets...what an absolute pain in the arse! I did not succesfully drill out one rivet, the only way i got them off was by banging the heads off them with a screw driver and a hammer, but still gets them off!

Clean the metal connectors off and scratch them up a bit with wet and dry, then solder the wires on directly

When you remove the rack and clamp bit that goes on the bottom of the window, will the window stay up i.e. closed, if so, how? what holds it up?
What I'm asking is, can you remove the whole motor and rack togeter with the window still in, without the window falling inside the door.

as soon as you undo the two screws that hold the window to the rack it will gradually slowly slide down

i would imagine so
WHats the time scale if you went throgh a day to do it and are XR2i door cards the saem size as the 5 door cause using one would eliminate the winder holes?

Nope XR2i's are 3 door cars and the doors are much longer than a door from a 5 door fiesta. May be able to cut them down or something? Retrim them at same time
