GUIDE: Making a DIY Single Wiper.

Postby ZetecSX on Sun Oct 26, 2003 8:30 pm

Single wiper conversion..... :aviator:

Right pay attention class there will be a test at the end. :D

Tools you will need:

1, Hacksaw,
2, Vice
3, Hammer
4. 13mm spanner
5. Angle grinder (or a file and some excess energy)
6, Drill
7, Small round file

Procedure:

1, Nip down 2 your local scrapyard and get yourself another wiper assembly (Just in case it all goes horribly wrong or don’t get it done all in one day)
Image

2, Remove the link arms from the assembly (use a spanner to pop the plastic cups off the metal balls)
Image

3, Cut the round tube on the drivers side off next to the main section of the linkage.
Image

4, Unbolt the centre arm (with the double ball) from the motor.
Image

5, Taking the drivers side section you cut away. Cut the rotating arm (with the ball) off next to the rod that passes through the fixed section of the linkage. This cut needs to be made as close as possible to make the new centre link as long as possible.
Image

6, Drill a hole in the end of the piece that you just cut. This hole needs to be the same as the one in the end of the original centre link (the double balled one) File it to suit the motor shaft. Grind the end round where you cut it to make it look professional !
Image

7, Put the same section in the vice and bend it to resemble the original centre link.(but longer) You need to make clearance for the linking rod to pass over the centre shaft.
Image

8, Now reassemble the linkage but leave the centre nut very loose.
Image

9, Remove the wiper assembly from your car. And replace with your freshly modified version.

10, Turning your attention to the wiper arm. Either use one from a car with a single wiper as standard (Citroen BX is suitable.) or put one of your existing wipers into the vice and straighten it. (the best you can do is a strange shape still though.

11, Position the wiper arm in line with the linkage arm on the other side of the scuttle panel.

12, Wipe the screen once. (remember that nut is loose so the wiper itself won't move.

13. Position the wiper on the screen manually where you want it. then tighten up the nut on the motor spindle. (should you wish to reposition the wiper later undo this nut and adjust it)

14, Make sure the linkage doesnt catch on its self or anything else. (if it catches on itself bend the flat bit on the passenger side to cure the problem)

Job done. Congratulations.

Right now 4 the test. See how many people turn up at next years shows with single wipers. :D

If anyone needs any clarifiction i will do me best!

So I can use BX wiper arm and save lots of $$$? :o
Some actual pics of the various stages would be nice to go with the diagrams :)

that wiper on that fiesta is nearly touching the rubber screen aint it!?!

what size blade is that?,i used a super small one from halfords which sits 8-10" off the top where the rubber screen is.

WIll the arm do a 180 degress swipe to clear the whole windscreen, I am a bit confused as it would only go to 90 on the current motor won't it?

Also can it be set to be at the bottom when not in use as I don't really like them up the centre of the screen.

no it only sweeps the passenger side of the screen, and you can only park it vertically

read it, what do u think

to get the full effect of having the whole screen cleared you have to postion is 1/4 way up from the bottom of the screen on the passenger side mate :)

it wouldn't pass an MOT unless the wiper is down at the bottom when off would it?

I am still failing to see how it would do a full 180 movement :-?

Righto. Some more answers.
Percy! :it wouldn't pass an MOT unless the wiper is down at the bottom when off would it?

The red fiesta passed the MOT with the wiper parked vertically (was given an advisory for it tho.)

Percy! :I am still failing to see how it would do a full 180 movement

RS_Rawli :

Because the linkage is modifiyed (the bit that bolts to the motor is lengthened the wiper sweeps further. With a standard linkage it would only sweep 1/2 the screen. The red car wiper swept from rubber to rubber.

percy! :Also can it be set to be at the bottom when not in use as I don't really like them up the centre of the screen.

The wiper can be positioned anywhere on the screen.

Tonys_Phatfiesta :.that wiper on that fiesta is nearly touching the rubber screen aint it!?!

what size blade is that?,i used a super small one from halfords which sits 8-10" off the top where the rubber screen is.

The arm on the red car is a standard fiesta arm straightened with a standard wiper blade.

wywywywy : So I can use BX wiper arm and save lots of $$$?

Yes and No the only bits i use are the wiper arm from a BX not the linkage. (i.e. only the bit you can see with the bonnet shut.) And a mk3 fiesta linkage.(the bit hidden underneath)

I have used black red and blue in my pics. i havnt highlighted any thing the different colours represent different parts of the wiper linkage.

Think thats covered all points raised.

gonna do this tomorrow but i dont see how u can change the parking position, as if you park it in the centre it will do 180 onto teh bonnet, or if its designed to do 90 each way from centre it will do 90 onto the bonnet when parked on the passenger side?

Cheers buddy. Did mine today, took me a few hours tho on and off cos i cheated by not using a vice or a grinder. Looks smart and saved a wedge, great guide. Ive got a problem tho :-? , ive got it sittin in the centre but would prefer it jus 1/4 way up on passenger side. When i adjusted it like someone said above it hit the bonnet. Not a problem as it looks well smart anyways.

Get writing up some more guides, Carl :Q

Just done this, Cheated by using standard middle bit as it started to rain and it doesnt sweep the whole screen.

Dont see how a bit of metal a few mm longer is gonna make much difference :-? But ill have a go tomorrow!

Thanks James

Mine just passed the MOT with this so you should be ok.

The hardest bit I found was actually getting to the wiper motor etc

What did you do to take it out then just so i dont sruggle as much im not technically minded lol.

I really want to do this mod but im not sure whether the end result will be worth it? Do you think its looks nicer than 2 wiper arms?

btw what wiper arm have you used?

Cheers
