To Quaife or not to Quaife?

Postby andyhardy on Mon Feb 16, 2004 10:20 pm

I'm about to buy a new gearbox for my turbo as the fiesta gearbox has no lsd.

I'm going for a http://www.gearboxman.co.uk jobby and they've suggested that I either go for their Escort RST Stage 1 box with their own rerated LSD (£550+VAT outright) or they can do the Escort RST Stage 2 box with Quaife ATB diff (£850+VAT outright).

Has anybody got exprience of either of these and can they suggest what I go for?

fiesta-jim's currently sorting me out with his 1.9 bottom end and t3 turbo which should make things more fun and hence why I'm going for this new gearbox!

Cheers,

Andy

I have a stage 2 box and i think its great, the ATB is very noticable..

It has the strength to last with my driving and engine

Well I'd have to say I thought you were talking about the box BUT as you are talking about the diff I would say yes...definitely. You only realise how cr@p the original one is when you have the ATB...plus it makes a nice noise as you approach 'quicker' speeds  I just hope the rest of the box lasts me longer than a week when the engine's in :D

I think touring/rally car style noises at high speed is definitely the way to go, and with the way that poll is turning out it looks like I have no other option but to go for the Quaife ATB diff.

If anyone thinks differently, please let me know!

Bugger - just phoned up gearboxman.co.uk and there's a 3 to 4 week waiting list for the gearboxes and diffs.

I've got to order it tomorrow morning but it kind of doesn't fit in with the engine change over next week!

Oh well - I'll just have to run it on the standard gearbox for a while!

Unless anyone's selling an uprated Escort RST gearbox with Quaife ATB diff for less than a grand? :D

Cheers,

Andy
