[Guide] Think i found an easier way to modify your clock...
Dont know if this has been posted since the guide using LEDs etc, as i haven't been on for ages, but i thought this might be useful for anyone who doesn't want their clock blue...
If you totally dismantle your clock:
You'll find the green filter will just fall out (well mine did):
Then if u make a replicar piece using the colour of your choice (I used some of the stuff used to go in front of stage lighting) like so:
Then re-assemble it, u don't need LEDs at all!

U know the plastic stuff the put in front of lights, to change the colour of them, it's just see through coloured plastic... the more see through the better u can see it during the day, the more like the colour of the digits the harder it is to distinguish between them

I dunno, just something Red and see through that i found in the shed! lol
But I would image any form of see through plastic would be fine, the bulb wouldn't get hot enough to melt it I dont think

Where do you guys buy coloured acetate?
I've been searching for it for the last couple years (honestly!!) to filter the VFD on my PC...
I tried the usual suspects, like Stape, Tesco, Asda, Argos, websites (found one in the states) and some high street stationery shops... still not found yet

mixon - Your clocks look really hot-spottish, is that just the camera? Clocks often come out looking like that in photo's. Do you just leave the LED's sitting above the bulb holders like that, or do you poke them into where the standard bulbs sit? And what did you do with the green filter? I want blue clocks to go with all the other blue stuff in my car!

Yea they are a bit hot spotish, but some of it is [ERRR] it was taken with my mobile and in the dark.
I did have differnt led's before, they were diffused led's and spread the light better, 2nd time I done it (above) I bought the wrong type of led's but couldnt be bothered to send them back
I have removed the green diffuser and the Led's are super glued into position 3 of them one for each dial, I had six the first time, but it was too bright.

There u go.... it's expensive for just one clock, but if u plan to use it else where it wouldn't be that expensive.... unless u can go buy 5cm by 2cm!!!

Thank you Wh1teLeopard!
Damn I must have been to Maplins for at least 100 times these two years...
And I didn't notice they sell these!
The price seems okay to me, I can do both my VFD's, and both my dashes, all my switches and I'd still have a huge roll left to make a jacket...
But I have already done many clocks with LED's so I probably won't need these for the clock... hmm... hang on I might try to see if these evens out the light.
Many thanks!

if you still have any 3d glasses hangin around from that freddie kruger 3d movie nutsack you could quite quickly fashion yourself a green or red clock, super budget style.

Had a play around today with a spare clock i picked up at the breakers.
Tried various combinations of filters etc. but decided that it was best without a filter for now until I get bored of it and get some blue led's.
As mentioned above somewhere, mk3's have the numbers lit, whereas the mk3.5's have the backs lit. Now if you have one and want to change to the other for whatever reason, you cannot just swap the whole clock as they have different connectors, but i found out that you can just swop the actual display over and theres no problems!
(Mk3 display is the black one)
So heres the Mk3 display in:
And with the Mk3.5 display in:
(It's not as bright as the picture makes out)
Mines a Mk3, and I chose to keep the Mk3.5 display in as its a bit of a change. Theres no hot-spot at all on either of them.

So you just have to remove the green filter and replace the bulb with a LED , where do you solder the led too and the resistor? where does that come in?
guess i need these?
http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/default.php? ... 48baea7de2
what about the one with the resistor attached?
http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/product_info ... cts_id=750
do i need 1mm 3mm or 5mm ones? i have a solderin iron somewere, but if someone could do a simple guide or diagrams id like that then maybe if i can do it i wouldnt mine doing other peoples for the price of leds and postage?
cheers

There are two metal contacts either side of the hole the bulb goes in, solder one leg of the LED to that and the other leg to the resistor, and the leg of the resistor to the other contact. You will need to work out which is the postive contact on the clock and which LED leg, i cant remember. 5mm should do nice. One with the risistor will save you time and it will be the correct one.

I've got it all done except the clock so this is all pretty useful.
For the speedo etc I have removed the green filter (pretty easy to do) and I have blue leds mounted in the standard bulb holders, it illuminates everything. To finish it off I've painted the needles luminous red so they stand out when the leds are on.
My mate JayRS did me the switches (heated front/rear fogs front/rear) with blue leds when the lights are on and when the switches are on, and they look ace!
For the heater control panel I ripped it apart, scanned the 'graphics' on plastic piece tidied it up in paint shop pro and printed it off on photopaper. I then stuck this back on the original plastic piece and stuck the control panel back together. I then used a direct replacement 501 blue led and now it lights up blue (or any colour I want). The other method is to remove the 'graphics' from the plastic piece then use a stanley knife to scratch off the green backing around the symbols. This works just as well it's just a pain. If anyone wants the scanned template let me know and I'll send it over.
If anyone wants any pics leave me a message.
Nick.
