i had ur exact same problem, i fuc*in hated the sound of my 1.3.
i went around loadsa places tht told me there was no induction kits/air filters that i could fit to my 1.3 until i went to halfords who sorted me out for £118 with a Green Cotton Air Filter.
doesnt make alot of difference performance wise but it sounded alot beefier. exhaust wise id go for rage or powerflow they foookin rude

i have a 1.3, the isnt a lot of things you can do to it, to increase performance.
instead of forking out for an air filter, just drill your original one,
also reset and grind your tappets, i will be doing this very shortly. This will make a huge difference to the noise
plus as above a backbox should make a sweet sound

I have a 1.3sx (not lx but similar enough)
I have a bolt on K&N and a backbox - the filter has made a small diff in performance and sounds great - and the back box is quite loud! I suppose you need an induction system due to fuel injection though.
Fast road cam, induction system, exhaust system and do tappets as said above.
Also could go for a better manifold - i have one but not allowed to put it on for insurance reasons.
Should be noticeable.

HOW MUCH for the green cotton
on my 1.3 i had a piperx filter and full stainless exhaust made and fitted by the nice guys at ascar in sheffield, http://www.exhaustsuk.com.
think the piperx cost about 50 quid in total from my local unicar.
exhaust cost 300quid
had a lot of work done to engine at this point so it all complimented itself well, put it this way pulled 115 on speedo all way from devon to doncaster!!!

Depends, i have heard afew problems with people usuing the bolt on from the XR2 and replacing the airbox.
I just got a replacement element and drilled the box on my 1.1 makes a nice enough sound for not much money.

I wouldn't spend any more than £100 total on any mods you wish to do to the 1.3 HCS.
How much extra on the insurance to go to a 1.4? which is a much more modern powerful lump and is easier to tune.
If you are thinking of going any further than Filter and exhaust change, you will probably need to change the cam (Kent do defo do one) but that means the engine has to come out, and its not worth going to all that hassle and sticking the HCS back in.

the 1.6 si is always the best start for a low insurance fiesta. the 1.4 is like 100 cheaper for me on insurance than my 1.6 si. thats why i went for the 1.6 and a nice 2.0 is gna fall in place next yr

Jam, What manifold u got? Pics please!!
A bolt on filter is what u want.
Allthough, my drilled airbox with the pipe removed sounds pretty cool.

Current manifold - you can see under the heatshield its one big heavy lump. 4-2-1.
New lightweight 2 piece manifold. Much better flow.
I think it will add around 5 hp.
Yea I know everything needs a clean - someday I will!

EDIT: Sorted - damn photobucket

I'm in the same situation as you lot on making engine mods to the 1.3. I have kinder given up modding it. I've done all I think I can do that is reasonable.
Things I have done,
• Replaced the element with a K&N
• Drilled airbox
• Taken the air inlet pipe off to the airbox
• Put oil breather on the filler cap, but took it off because it was getting oil on the engine
• Taken battery out and pressure washed engine and re oiled it
• Adjusted tapets
• Changed spark plugs
• Changed HT leads
• Oil Change
• Changed oil filter
Quite a lot, but quite a lot of money spent on a deadend engine.
Things left I could do,
• Exhaust
• Manifold
• Cam change
However a lot of money for such a deadend engine.
Don't get me wrong, I think the car is brilliant just shame the engine lets it down a bit.
Currently running
• 15" escort gti wheels, with 45 profile toyo tyres
• -40mm springs
I think it's time to add to the handling side
LET'S TURN IT INTO A GO KART
Happy modding!!!

I really want to get mine on a rolling road, Sounds sad but i want to see if its making standard power or maybee more. Its been heard of before and it seems unusually pokey.
Jam, That manifold looks old lol. Where u get it?

Yeah I'm thinking about getting mine on the rollers, not much they can do but worth getting a few things adjusted. My girlfriend's got a 106 xs 1.1 and her car is really nippy. The bloke that she brought it off had a rolling road, so he tuned it on there. So theres hope for us yet

I never tryed just drilling the airbox without the k&n so I never knew the difference. However the other week, when I did a service on my car I cleaned the airfilter and I used the proper K&N service kit. It was black before I cleaned it and after I had finished cleaning and oiling it, it looked brand new. Also I don't have to replace it again.
I don't mind spending money on things that will last, however I have to say it was a bit much to pay for just an airfilter.

I got my K&N element for my 1.1 on ebay for £25 (brand new) the smaller engine ones don't appear often but they can be found.
I don't think I could justify spending on cams etc on a 1.1 or 1.3 but saying that I have seen a 1.1 pushing about 80BHP, depends how you look at it, amazing for a 1.1 but not that amazing as far as performance goes.
I would spend my mony making it look nice and do an engine conversion later then start tuning if I was you guys.
But keep up the good work, good to see people taking pride in small engines (like i use to)

and be careful of that bit because if it breaks ford no longer supply that part!! Mine broke and my idle went nuts Done wonders for my acceleration though

Max M4X WW :Jam, That manifold looks old lol. Where u get it?
It is quite old - I got it off my Dads mate who built a kit car with a 1.3 Kent engine in it, and didnt use this manifold, so gave it to me as it fits my 1.3sx.
ill clean it up and spray silver when it eventually goes on or sell it. But i also sprayed my current manifold and the paints peeled as you can see in the first pic.
We (me and my Dad) rebuilt my engine replacing almost evrything replaceable and the difference was unbelievable for a 1.3 - so much nippier and added 5-10mph on top speed.
Knackered cams are one of the main reasons for loss of quickness i think, just replacing it with a new standard one will help. But you lot wont have that problem as you all have lx's by the sound of it!
Id say if you really want to tune the 1.3:
Lighten and balance, blueprint, fast road cam, air filter, exhaust system, manifold, replace everything like plugs/leads/filters/pumps, do tappets, and finally set up on rolling road.
Thats all the realistic things i can think off.

that manifold wont fit, ports are spaced differently, looks more like a x-flow exhaust though. the manifold i have sitting in my garden is totally different spacings to that.
