1.6 Si Speed limiter - What's the deal?

Postby Mark Si on Wed Jun 19, 2002 1:48 am

Right Elm and I have been talking about this for a while so i put it to the masses for some info on this:

My 1.6 Si (M reg) tops out at 110mph which is about 5500rpm, nowhere near the redline

Elm's 1.6 Si (N reg) reaches 130 and bounces off the rev limiter

Whats the difference between the two ages? Elm says its the throttle body but I thought it was the ECU - Can anyone help out here?

Cheers

i've got an N reg 1.6 Si, and i've taken mine as far as 115mph, and that is at 5500rpm , it felt as thought it could go quicker but i didn't want to blow my engine up !!!

and a guy who works for my dad who has an N reg 1.6 Si as well, has had his to 127mph, well so he says !!!! but looking at the way he drives i wouldn't be suprised.

maybe you're just driving like a pansy mark  :bonkers: :bonkers:

I don't believe anyone gets 130 mph from a 1600 Si!

I used to get about 117mph out of mine although my mates does about 120mph.

FFS my RS1800 only did 128mph top end!

the 1.25 zetec SE is a blinder of an engine my mum has a mk4 encore i got that upto 110 and it puklls all the way this engine just revs and revs higher and higher !

that i believe ! but max speed of a rs turbo is 130 so an Si which is some 40bhp down i think not !

and as phil said the gearbox wouldnt be able to get your there ! if it wont let him pull over 120 with a 2ltr in then it sure as hell aint gonna reach 130 with a 1.6!

this is a good old fashioned saxo forum speed war !!!

130 I dont think so - not possilbe.

I had an si gearbox with my first 2 litre installation - the gearing is such that they just wont do more than 125 - 125 was something daft like 7k I didnt push it anymore on standard rod bolts.

A 1600 si dosent have the torque to pull taller ratios so methinks someone has dodgy white dials lol!

ps my mum used to run si's and I never could get more than 115 out of them

i agree, dodgy speedos!

an escort cossie was timed at 137mph max with proper timing gear!
thats 2 litre-turbo'd - 225 bhp!!!!

ur telling me a 1.6si is only 7mph slower than a cossie?!

not having a go like but when it says 130mph it doesnt actually mean thats what youre doing! speedos are always set on the safe side.

still, its a lot faster than mine at the mo! :(

had 3 up on the way to FITP @ 125mph there was 3 of us so no BS

speaking to Mr stewart he thinks even tho it seams like it could pull to 130 (it didnt) it woundnt becuase the SI gearbox would be maxed out

either way 125 with 3 up cant complane

yes i can i want a TURBO

i think it has a lot to do with how it was driven from new if new cars are drove hard from new the engin runs 100% better if drove around by a woman (mark) or a grandad @ 20 mph all day then they run restricted

Ive managed to get a 110mph out of my 1.6s (XR2 carb) and the only mod ive done engine wise is a K&N, I was mucho impressed, but I dont think I cud have got anymore out of it, or really wanted to based on, either losing license or blowing up engine

Like i said i have a person who can back it up - i dont know how!! given the book speed says something like 105!! Oh and given that my engine has blown, i dont think that it did it any good doing speeds like 120 + on a reg basis racin back from uni!!

well a 1.7 litre Reno5 with about 120bhp (100 @wheels) can only muster about 115-120 and an orion 1.6i ghia jobbie just a tad more (bout 125)
r5 has the wind resistance of a fone box, and the orions, well black and hearse like.

120 in that r5 really didnt feel at all fast, it was wierd, just cruising along and then i looked at speedo!

Similar thing happened in me cousins FRST, altho it was still pulling and im used to being in the reno, which kinda give up accelerating much at about 95, well i expected to see about 100 or so on speedo of the festa and it said 120! got to about 130 before deciding it would be a good idea to slow down a touch as the private disused airfield we were on (deffo not the M18 between meadowhall and rotherham) had a load of traffic infront....

I will back up xrsi's 'wild' claims as i had my carb'd 1.6cvh motor up to 125mph the other day, tho it was pretty much maxed out. I gotta K&N, 2i manifold and zorst, and a re-jetted carb (oooh and chrome rocker cover, good for + 10bhp  )
I mean obviously speedos arent correct and underread by 7% or so as standard, but if people are comparing speedo ratings with other peoples speedo ratings (Without that crafty Lockwood 150mph kit blue-tacked on your 140 speedo :bonkers: ) then there souldnt be a problem.

Also, Mark, as everyone else with an Si has managed 110 + and mainly 120's max'd out, could it be that ur car has a problem?!? checked simple things like spark plugs as they can tell u what state ur engine's in, air filter, all gaskets are ok? Then you have to verge into the world of electronics with sensors and ecus if the engine is in good nick. A lot of simple things can cause non noticeable problems that sap power.
Hope all is well as it is a nice, tidy, well modded motor and would be a shame to see it all sad and underpowered

Cheers Jon, I've been thinking of giving my car a bit of a service soon, i.e. spark plugs, fuel filter etc. I'm also getting an induction kit asap so if my air filter is a bit restrictive that should help :)

Could my clutch have anything to do with it? I know its slipping some-what so could this have an impact on the top end?
