It will make a bit of a difference and it is something you can do as long as you have everything.

I have a 1.6s and am about to start the tuning, a new cam is first on my list, a good fast road cam will give more power than a new carb will for only a bit more money.

Depends what year the carb comes from

The later XR2 engines are identical to the 1.6's and will have the same carb. The older XR2's (C reg and before I believe) had a older carb which gave 96bhp instead of 90

However it also gave worse fuel economy. They dont change these things over for no reason after all :)

The 1.6s uses the later XR2 engines. They were left over and Ford needed a use for them so the 1.6s was born

The man is right :) all xr2's after C reg came with the same carb as the one on the 1.6s.

A simple mod for 6bhp if u ask me! However I'm not sure about the fuel consumption being a problem if u get an earlier carb because they were actually a far better carb than the later ones!!

God knows why Ford changed them

Why mess about for a mere 6bhp anyhow. Get twin 40's and do it properly :)

its basicully the equivalent of strapping a turbo onto a NA car.

Ok not exactly that dramatic but it turns a carb'd engine into abit of a beast!!! instead of having just one carb u have in effect 2 (I think thats right lol) therefore sucking in far more air than normal which in turn allows to engine to rev more freely and drink fuel faster than you can guzzle pints of special brew!

With regards to why bother with the small 6bhp increase, why bother fitting a charge cooler to a FRST if its already got a decent bhp? Ah yes because it allows you to run more boost gaining a few more bhp!

It works the same way for us XR2 engined drivers small bhp increases are as good as small bhp increases for you frst drivers! I agree that twin 40's would be in the ideal world the perfect mod to the air setup but they cost a crap load to buy and a crap load to keep fed!

I heard that none of the twin carbs can pass MOT or road side emission test?

My m8 had twin 40's on his escort and the cause nothin but grief. I [ERRR] they speed up fuel consumption X 3 and they need constant tuning to keep the both of them runnin' in sync.
