1.8 or 2.0 into 1.6si

Postby Dave106gti on Tue Jun 04, 2002 5:32 pm

How hard is it to put a larger zetec into a 1.6si, what would need changing? Which companies would do it for me as i have no technical skills whatsoever, what sort of cost would be involved?
Sorry about all the q's. :)

if its the 16v you have got the engine is just a straight swap apparently..............dont take my word on it tho as im not positive.

as for 1.8 or 2.0 go for the most you can i reckon as youll only regret it later when you get used to the speed......an what your insurance co. lets you have :)
Now owner of a Mk2 Golf, but a FRST is next mark my words (or a VR6 conv. for the golf :) )

Yeah as its a 1.6 si the engine mounts and various other parts can cope with a bigger zetec.

rs1800 or a 2.0 will probably be your best bet.

you could do the coversation yourself you and a haynes manual you will have it done in a weekend. as a garage wil probably rip you off.

Fairly straight forward swap. The 2.0 needs a different water pump fitting, and the sump and oil pickup pipe needs swapping for a 1.8 unit.
Fuelling will be a problem afterwards. You'll need to get the ECU tweaked or use a later ECU mapped for the 1.8 RS1800 for instance.

from what i gather 2.0 goes in but the sump and pickup pipe need swapping for a 1.8 item, and the waterpump and the alternator also need swapping *i think*

the sump needs swapig, oil pick up, oil pump, power steeering pump, water pump...use the 1.6 ones off ur old engine... then u need the mass airflow sensor/throttle body/ECU from the 2.0. u can use the manifolds of the 1.6, as the ports are alot wider than the engine.. werid really... but there ya go! i guess we have mr ford to thank :D
i cant think of owt else...
in all fairness it aint too hard.. altho i did have 2 top maties working on it :D
