1800 into Si

Postby xander7 on Fri Mar 12, 2004 7:16 pm

i know the general consenscous when it comes to upping the power in a 1600 Si is to go the 2.0ltr mondeo route, but what is the opinion of dropping an 1800 in?

i was chatting to a guy the other night, and he told me his mate had just put an 1800 zetec lump in his Si, which came from an Escort Si, the 130ps version. apparently it drops straight in, the wiring connections are the same, and is basically a very simple conversion. 130bhp as standard, which is just about the same as the mondeo lump i think. i assume the 1800 engine discussed is the same as the rs1800 lump ??? :-? but the advantage of taking it from the escort is the insurance group is alot lower than the rs1800i

how much potential for power is there from the 1800 lump? i know the 2.0ltr has bags of potential for tuning (see sunnys car for that !! ) , but other than that, is it not perhaps an easier route to go?

discuss :D

they are both just the same when it comes to converting, 2.0 will go in just as easy as an 1800 lump

The 2ltr will have more torqe, guy off here converted his rs1800 to a 2ltr and said there was a noticable differance. mondeo insurance group cant be that high.

The insurance of a Mondeo 2.0 is actually one group lower than the Escort 1.8 Si, or two groups lower if the Mondeo is a Ghia.

After driving several 2.0 mondeos and 1.8s the 1.8 is a nicer engne. - it revs more freely and in general feels quicker....

I researched this hugely and basically it comes down in the end to cost and availibility. 2.0 Mondeo lumps are plentiful 130BHP 1.8s are not. I searched high and low found a few but they were all high mileage and suspect. Insurance wont be much different the 2.0 has more torques and is a better platform for further tuning.

It's a no brainer m8
