1800 zetec conversion.....

Postby kolin_mc_reay on Sun Jun 12, 2005 2:56 pm

I have just bought a 1800 zetec i am going to use in my fiesta!
mk3.5 m' reg!

obviously i need to upgrade the sus and brakes!

I was planning on using frst struts and springs *NEW*
as this is the nearest type of engine to go off!
the top end is direct replacement so i believe!
however I would need the hubs!

I will be using grooved/drilled discs!

has anybody done this conversion?
and is the right thing to do with the sus/brakes?
~~~~~ :-? ~~~~~
ALSO:
if anybody has done this, what did you do mounting wise?
Thanks,
KoLiN! ~ :aviator:
What engine has your car currently got?
To fit RS turbo shocls to a mk3.5 you will need the hubs too.
As for other bits that need changing it depends on what you car currently has, if it is the 1.6 Si the brakes and suspension will be fine (also RS turbo items won't be any better), I would recommend an upgrade but it isn't a must.
As teh FRST is mk3 not mk3.5 like your 1.3 you'll need the Hubs, Lower arms, Driveshafts and maybe Track-rod Ends from a mk3 to fit them :(
As for brakes, the more you can spend the better really, cant compromise with stopping power :) However Like Percy! said the XR/RS/Si items would be ok as a but i'd go for something bigger and better personally.
There are loads of topics on here about converting HCS (1.0/1.1/1.3's) to Zetec.. Quite a bit of work unfortunatly :(
The RS1800 is a Mk3.5
Using parts from a 1.6 16v Si would be your best bet.
whats wrong with using rs1800 parts then?
just the kit is low!!!
and i need the extra strength so it doesnt bottom out!
thats why ideally i want something designed to hold an 1800 lump!
Si's aren't as rare and people smash them up all the time.
Rs1800's are more of a collectors car or enthusiasts.
ok!
just i'm only after the hubs!
would have bought new struts/springs!
so the best bet is Si setup you think then?
will i require anti-roll bars or the likes?
and do you think i should get uprated gas struts for extra support?
as the zetec will weigh more than the si!
Your best bet is to buy a smashed up Si cause you are going to need lots of bits that you just dont have at the moment.
The Mondeo 1800 engine will not go in without changing over loads of bits from the 1600 Si engine. You need - off the top of my head: Fuel pump, engine loom, alternator, power steering bracket assembly, all of the auxillery belt pullies, tensioners, aux belt, exhaust, manifold, starter, engine mounts (front and rear), struts, springs, anti roll bar, rear axle, crossbrace, front disks, callipers, rear brakes, gearbox. The list does go on....!
In fact the only two things that you can use from the Mondeo you have bought is the engine and ecu (assuming it a "blob").
Have recently done all of this and there is a lot of work. It's far cheaper an easier to buy a smashed up or mot failed Si cause you have all of the parts you need then.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.
