19. tall block conversion?
hi
ive just been reading the http://www.specialisedengines.co.uk advert for their 1.9cvh turbo conversion,
this is the first time ive consided a conversion so was just wondering a few things
as im already running 195 chip/ beiges/ T3 / uprated fuel pump, could all of this still be used on the new conversion?? is it a case of just swapping the bottom ends round???
what ecu/management would have to be used and would they supply it?
would it be a simply case of me dropping the car off and me paying for their services and driving off?????
sorry if these are dumb questions just never really read into conversions before
thanks

Just got a stage 1 engine for my frst from Specialised Engines, they are absolutely great guys . Could not fault the service one bit.
They spoke to me about the 1.9 american tall block and apparently all the bits from the CVH, t3 etc, fit straight on.
I'm not sure if they actually do a fitting service, I bought mine from them, they delivered to my garage of choice, for about £60, and then they pick up the old engine when it's ready.
I suggest if you need any info just ring Specialised Engines and they will explain everything.
Hope this helps

I got a 1.6 CVH stage 1 engine , it was £1,770 thats including delivery and a £200 deposit on your old engine. Then when your old engines ready to be picked up you just ring them and they arrange it all then you get your deposit back.
They deliver it anywhere you want it to go, I just got it delivered straight to the garage in Hull. It took them about a week to make it up and have it delivered, it really was great service

wildheart :Stick with the 1.6,They rev better.
Agree
The 1.9 rods really aren't too keen on being used in a turbo application. CliffS1 from PF's looked like bananas when they were removed from his 1900.
A good strong 1600 is the way to go imho
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

I am heading down the exact same route.
Just been in talks with Ian from Specialised Engines who will hopefully sort me out with a 1.9cvh inc. fitting, oils and VAT for the sum of £2100.
I am running similar spec to you. Well, the T3 and hoping to get around 200bhp from the conversion. Ian said the T3 and the mods im running with now will simply bolt straight on to the new engine.
He didnt mention whether or not the box and clutch are included in this price, anyone know??
Just need to build the funds up now, looking forward to spending some serious cash on the old girl... will be interested to hear how yours goes!!
They do seem really nice guys and geniune Ford nuts

i know xr_dub has got the 1.9 or did have it, i wonder what his views are and what price he got it for???? and what spec he's running bhp and all that god stuff,
and surely if the rods are poo in the 1.9 could you not just replace with stronger/better rods???
as for revving better??? im confused!!!!
£2100 for a full conversions is abit steep i may end up going down the zvh or full blown 2.0 zetec!!!
i love to here peoples view on it all befor i spend the funds!!!!
ive fully stripped her today aswell i'll get some pics up soon!!!

Yeah I know it does help knowing the good places to go and peoples own opinions
I can justify spending 2k on an engine that i know that has been done professionally and who i can rely on the company. If the price sounds too good to be true - it probably is too good to be true IMO
I need to get a date to get mine done - hopefully as early into next year as possible, then i can start stripping her down and cleaning it. Luckily the body work has recently been done and is mint ..... looking forward to it tho!!

Before you even think of going to specialised engines for a 1.9 engine you should ask Matt on passionford about the one he had

This is the spec of my engine...
Specialized Engines 1.9 CVH 8V Stage 3 engine,
Stage 3 big valve head,
Piper 285 T2 Cam
it was the early design engines From S.E 2001
I bought this off a FT memmber on 24/4/2005
and stuck it in 6 months later and havnt looked back
its solid as a rock
should be around 250Bhp - 280BHp thats what i have been Told by
Mark and Ahmed from Grove Garage.. and they say its a very rapid 1.9 that they have driven and mapped.. i have done a 1/4 mile in a 13.7 @ 109 mph using a standard s2 rst gearbox and top speed run of 147 mph... the car is just damm torquey very fun to drive indeed.... not to bad...
as for the 1.6 8v cvh theres so much you can do to it like the 1.9 8v cvh
i have only seen one quick 1.6 cvh rst gavrst on FT but they still run out of puff, the 1.9 cvh block is better for me..
But for me ZT is the way and its getting cheaper todo...
i should have done a ZT but i stuck with the 1.9 , the plan is todo a ZT next year winter time who knows
But buying the engine is only one part, you got to get the
rest of your setup right etc

You need to think about
which intercooler ?
which Alloy Rad ?
Which turbo you going for : t3 4x4 or t34 or normal t3?
Exhaust system ?
Injectors : what flow do you need for that power ?
Fuel Pump?
Head : is it a stage 3, BVH ?
Oil breather?
Mapping the car ? or running a Chip for that power?
Ofab? ofac? aftermarket stuff like DTA etc
what boost you can run with your internals etc....
lots of things to think about, theres plenty on the main site to guide you
and on fourm

Another thing to point out,All the fastest CVH's are 1.6.
The only fast 1.9 ive seen is Ollie's @ NMS and thats a bit more than a shonky S.E conversion

i'd go zetec turbo
but i ve gone 1.6 mildly tuned (head work, beiges, hybrid t25, fmic, stage 2 chip etc etc) and it seems to rev freely, and has a good power band,
never driven a 1.9 but i ve been told they produce very good mid range and top end power!
cant beat the old zvh motor though this is the motor of choice for my ka (in 07), zvh's can be built for much less than 2100 and produce 230+bhp and you get the torque due to the increased displacement with the 1.8 or 2.0!
if money permits Zetec Turbo all day
i'd like to drive a 300bhp 1.6cvh i can jus imagine it would be mental

Tim Butcher has done a 12.9 and that was on his spare engine!
And as far as im aware Ollie's is one of very few 1.9's that performs.

1.6 every time for me
ZVH's are crap and dont rev at all
Full Zetecs are expensive to do properly and zetec engines breathing is rubbish.

The only tuner i'll touch is NMS up at Alfreton (jct28) but they wont touch frst's because of the s**t managment (unless you put cosworth managment on,which is the only way to go).

nothing wrong with frst management, he either hasnt got the equipment to map it or he's just a lazy arse. shame as he's very good at what he does
back to the subject, and good reliable quick cvh can be built if done properly

I'll have to disagree with you about the managment,It was ok when it was acouple of years old but its crap with age!
I had K reg one a few years ago and when speaking to Karl about it last week i said it was rubbish he knew what things went wrong with it before i told him lol.
Had quite a few friends with same problems and wont touch frst's with standard managment either now!

DON'T GO NEAR SPECIALISED ENGINES!! yeah they are "special" but not in the good sense of the word lol!
I had a 1.6 stage 2 cvh n/a engine built by then for my '2i way back in 1998 and it was brilliant, never missed a beat.
Then things went (very) wrong in 2001 when i gave them my previous rs1800 to do a 2litre(stage3) for 1.8 swap on:
The engine drank oil like it was free-a pint every 500 miles whereas my standard 1.8 never touched a drop
(i ran all engines in to specialised engine's reccomendations and hardly gave them any abuse, in fact most of the blow-ups happened during sedate driving!)
The number 3 piston cracked up between the rings after only 3000miles
The kent vernier pullleys came loose and the exhaust one fell off on the M20!!! (They tried blaming Kent but i think it was their fault-i know who's got the better 'pedigree')
After 2 more re-builds i still had a car that drank more oil than petrol, cost me thousands of my hard-earnt (all in that fat bloke's pocket that runs "specialised") and was unreliable.
When Connaught competition engines (see them in current issue of retro ford) took the engine apart they found some howling errors! One that really pissed me off was the fact that the "special" people had use budget made-of -chocolate engine reconditioning pistons in my "stage 3" zetec build- probably why i ended up on the back of an AA truck on the A303 with oil all over my bulkhead!!
With the connaught work my n/a zetec kicked out 220 bhp (£5000 of work +jenvey 45"s and DTA management which i had used on the "specialised" lump and achieved only 174 "oily" bhp) and drank no more oil than a standard zetec, says something doesn't it?!
Heed my words mate, STAY AWAY FROM THE FAT BOY IN GRAYS! ! He will only take your money and run, if anything goes wrong he will just blame you and try and bill you even more There are so many better and more proffesional tuners out there now.
Back to YOUR car: go Zetec 16v turbo, silly not to as nowadays zetec silver AND black tops are so cheap and DO have a bit more potential, especially with all the new management systems available.
Good luck with your car, sorry 'bout the essay
After 2 more re-builds i still had a car that drank more oil than petrol, cost me thousands of my hard-earnt (all in that fat bloke's pocket that runs "specialised") and was unreliable.

wildheart :I'll have to disagree with you about the managment,It was ok when it was acouple of years old but its crap with age!
I had K reg one a few years ago and when speaking to Karl about it last week i said it was rubbish he knew what things went wrong with it before i told him lol.
Had quite a few friends with same problems and wont touch frst's with standard managment either now!
