1985 Capri 2.0 Laser

Postby jonyb4 on Wed Jan 25, 2012 9:20 pm

Its happened :aviator:

ive been looking for one of these for almost a year, the higher premiums and the fact they're shooting in price has kept me from finding one

after i announced to the old man im planning on buying a small project Si he decides to tell me hes secretly been looking and even bidding on mk3 capri's
even while his 7 year project/show car mk1 capri is as we speak being stripped of its old paint and awaiting a new coat of green, and a repaired bulk head

greedy?

well 3 days ago he told me hes just won a 1986 laser and after planning to go get it from Preston, Lancashire, bit of a drive

we set off today with his mate in his escort GTi estate thanks to its towbar (who has the red cossie lookalike P100)

489 mile journey we left at 6am, got home at just gone 4pm

using an A frame to tow the car is a breeze, you can safely tow a car alone and it will steer for you

anyway we got there, seen the guys new capri that replaced the one were buying, was a bit naughties styled even had a 3 door whale fin on the boot, thankfully the laser were were buying was far less "interesting" ill say

A frame connected up

C reg '85 2.0 automatic laser, completely standard with an alarm/immobiliser of some make

tax till end of march, mot end by then too, cant remember when exactly

known issues before winning the auction:

tatty body work, bubbles and a ding in the wing, paint a bit flat
low compression in one or more cylinders and stalls after 15mins of idling, believed to be head gasket

upon inspection we found:

tear in drivers seat
slightly past it parcel shelf
i found a possible bulge in 1 tyre?
remote for alarm battery had died so couldnt start the car, and the box had to be disconnected as the guy couldnt shut the alarm up due to the dead remote
battery then died after us trying

apart from these which i will be rectifing myself as the old man is occupied with his mk1, bit stupid buying this atm considering then :oooh:

anyway considering ive been dieing to get my hands on a mk3 for all this time im more than happy to do the work, diamond white is quite easy to blend in when spraying too using a rotary so im going to tackle the rust myself with confedance after what i learned from doing the Si

in the case the engine is kaput, we have 3 paths

A if unserviceable, replace the pinto with another 2.0

B replace the pinto and auto box with a I4 8v from the mk2 sierra our friend has lieing around mated to a type 9 gearbox

C replace the pinto and auto box with a 2.0 Zetec mated to a type 9 gearbox (obviously along with the pedal box, funded by selling the rare auto box)

this was going to be a buy cheap fix up sell on job, but ive convinced him to use it, im hoping after myself doing the work i can get a deal out of him when im ready to own it myself

sorry for the long post

battery is on charge, will get a battery for the remote tomorrow, and ill begin trouble shooting, starting with a compression test, but signs of water spillage from the expansion tank do suggest a blown gasket

so expect some good updates regarding this :Q

comments and critisim welcome :)

I do love mk3 Capris :Q

I'm hoping a Zetec finds its way in there, that would be awesome!

haha yea, only felt minor pinto power, old mans mk1 has a cammed 1.6 id guess running about 85bhp maybe more as it has a 4-1 too

anyway with a zetec it be so easy to light the rear wheels up :oooh:

tried to get it started early now we have a battery in the remote and charged up battery, but only got it cranking, tomorrow ill see if i can see it sparking, then ill check fueling :aviator:

went for the very reasonable sum of £500.01

luckily as the reserve was set at £500.00 :o
half expected the guy to say "oh sorry it got stolen..." but he needed it gone, his mother in law was moaning at it on her drive and he already replaced it with another capri

was thumbing through its history earlier, bought in essex, so its likely it come from Allan ford, which is where my Si was purchased, then spent its life in oldham since 1990 then moving slightly to Preston

its on 79k, plenty of reciets to prove as low as 30/40k

me and the old man couldnt get it started again earlier, once im done with the Si ill push it in, reconnect the prop (disconnected for towing, auto) and check for fueling, maybe the filter is clogged, but it is sparking... so its not an immobiliser issue

yea exsactly, dont know why my old man didnt take the airbox off

thing is its a carb engine, the fuel pump is ont he engine, and its been stood since november, its going to be bit of a sod to start, cranking it props isnt enough to draw the needed fuel from the tank, pour some fuel in and let it start and it should suck more fuel through and run

done with the si in the garage so will push it in tomorrow and get her going, we almost got it running yesterday, it wanted to but the battery keeps dieing, stupid maintaince free's

was it running in november ? should go if it was as its not that long ago.

take fuel pipe off the carb hold it over a old cup or something, get someone to crank it over, you should get fuel pulseing out, if you do and allok there quickly take the top off the carb its only 6 screws and the very small choke clip, they some times get mucky fuel or gungy in the carb

let me know how you get on i love capris :D

well its in the garage now, failed to start it, had a weak spark so changed the coil for another, bit better, pouring fuel down the car but still wont start

ill do that then, see if fuel comes through the pipe, kinda clueless with older engines myself, never had a carb or dizzy lol

few pics, somehow managed to get it in the garage by myself pushing it!, couldnt even do that with my Si

if its still on points give them a clean and set the gap depends on dizzy bosch 0.018" motorcraft 0.025" and ignition timing wants to be about 8 btdc :D

loving the pics

looks like its boiled over out of that expansion tank though :(

not sure how to set the gap, on what the rotor arm or the breaker point?
old man bought one of them electronic breakers off ebay for his mk1, worked a treat starts straight up and idles better!

aye boiled over, still water in the tank

you think the engine is terminal after something like that?
might have just been a case of increased pressure slowly leaking the water out of the tank, checked the cap on it, its actually a washer bottle cap, doesnt even fit the bottles hole... so it would have been easy for water to escape

and cheers i love the interior, is perfect i wont touch anything in there, except maybe white dials, his last white capri had white dials and it looked very nice indeed :aviator:

yeah electronic ignition kits are cheap and good and does away with the points, also pinto sierras have electronic ignition a little bit of work involved mainly wiring it in and getting a 12 volt coil as alot of old fords have a ballast resistor hidden inline affecting the rate of voltage going to the coil

i fitted the sierra set up on my cortina it worked a treat

the after market kits are much cheaper though and easy to wire in

thats only a overflow bottle you can actually run without it, mk2 escorts dont use a bottle just have a overflow pipe hanging down the side of the radiator, obviously dont fill the radiator to the brim allow for expansion and youll find it rarely chucks any out of the pipe, again i removed my cortina expansion bottle and just ran the pipe down the side of the radiator.

you may find that your capri has just been over filled hence the bottle over flowing, or there could be a problem, but id say its been over filled.

back to the points yeah take them out clean the contacts refit them and set the gap between the contacts on the points, have the plastic heal of the points on the highest poin/edge of the spindal (which the rotar arm sits on) while you set the gap. hope you understand that lol.

white dials will look good.

let him know im interested mate! very interested!

wouldnt stick an auto for long i know that lol

me and the old man had a casual play with her tonight, come to an agreement.. a plan of action

going to get hold of a mates compression tester... pretty much square one of figuring out how f**cked your headgasket is, if apauling, will have to consider things, will then remove the cam cover, check each valve and the cam, if bad = new head

if what would be acceptable to a HG failure we will then buy a headgasket set = £20 on ebay sorted fit and new bolts ofcourse

we will then see if we can get the spark better as tonight proved awful, spark from the coil wasnt brillaint and spark from the plugs wasnt very good either, even used one of them inline spark plug light things to see how strong a current is, and again compared to his 1.6 in the mk1 were weak charges

so then we will spend another £20 buying an electronic breaker thingy for the dizzy, worked a treat on the mk1 starts first time everytime and idles faaar better, so that should hopefully sort things out, refill coolant and service = sorted 2.0 pinto!

will update when we get it compression tested then!! watch this...

cheers for the tips mate, will probs just get the electronic kit, seem far more reliable and hastle free tbh, and cheap as dirt!

what kind of four branch's are out there for them? and what price are you expected to pay?
i know the cam kits are like £115 which even for a single cam thats fudgekin cheap!

bet i can see a fair gain from this engine for relatively low cost
what about carb routes? dont like the sound of this 32/34 one, im not a genius with carbs (quite clueless tbh) i the un even figures seem to suggest uneven distribution there, and i know thats not ideal :P

if them figures mean the "bore" or diameter, i know a 2.0 is better with around a 40 or 45

could be talking out my arse here but what carbs do you recommend?
or is this one all i need?
would prefer to keep the auto choke as its easier, ill forget to use it coming from a EFI car...

for a 2.0 twin 45s are best if your going down that route, or you can use a 38 dgas from the old 3.0 engines, get it jetted correctally for the pinto

i would only fit twin carbs if you do some head work and a cam though, with the 38 dgas you can still have auto choke and on dgas carbs both chokes open together rather then one first and second if you boot it, i had 38 dgas on my cortina.

those 32/34 numbers are the venturi diameter, primary 32mm, secondary 34mm, supprised its not 32/36 on yours, 38 dgas has two 38mm venturis

you can get really fancy 4 branch manifolds costing a few hundred, my cortina one was a second hand ebay purchase, ghias usually had a 4 branch fitted as standard, theres loads of various 4 branches for pintos all will fit to the engine, but they vary to fit to the rest of your car ie around engine mounts, steering racks and such like but could be addapted to fit around these areas. but best getting a capri one then its straight fit

electronic ignition is a good idea too
