1985 Capri 2.0 Laser
Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, spares and cosmetic repair
old man got it running again earlier
needs a different carb, the spare is knackered, pissed petrol out the seals, and this one isnt meant for a capri, only the primary venturi opens, so its going to be quite sluggish, perfect excuse for them twin 38s me thinks!

proof of it running for matt as he has no faith
oops needs a new backbox
it has more power than before, but still lacking what you'd expect, and a misfire... ignition timing and carb need setting up proper, but neither of us know how to do it, so im trying to talk him into getting a set of bike carbs to go on it, and sell the dellortos on
a sneaky with my Si
first time getting a good look at the gold calipers
garage is needed for the mk1 to get its engine loom sorted, cant keep putting it off in this rain...

You don't know how to set up a carb, so instead you want to get 4 of them and hope it will fix the problem?
Instead of doing that and wasting money, sort the engine out, get it running smoothly and properly, THEN get bike carbs.

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, spares and cosmetic repair
What dont I understand? All I am simply trying to do is point you in the right direction. Stripping the carb down and cleaning it will take about an hour, maybe 2 depending how much you know about them and what carb it is. Google will give you guides to stip it down if you don't know how. Then when it's cleaned up it will probably run a lot better, if not properly. If it still doesn't run properly, look at other things which can make it run s**t, timing, plugs, leads, dizzy ect, then tick them off one by one until you get it running properly. Once it's running properly, then stick some bike carbs on it.
You can't always cut corners and go 'ahh f**k it, stick some bike carbs on there it will run better then' because more often than not it wont. Just think, if you get 4 bike carbs which aren't set up properly for the engine or are sold as 'working' but actually need cleaning up and stuff, you'll just stick them on hoping it'll run alright without getting the engine running properly first... But it probably wont. Then you will be f**cked because you will have 4 carbs to strip down and put back together, and then possibly find out why its still running like s**t.
All I'm trying to do is save you hassle, time, money ect. But if you want to slap 4 bike carbs on there, then do it. But don't moan when it still runs like s**t

reason it needs a good carb is the one that's on it come from another setup, and the way the throttle connector is it doesn't open both butterflies when at full throttle, I have once stated this before
and the other carb we have is shagged, all the seals are gone and its very coked up, so not bothering to look at that

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, spares and cosmetic repair
done some work to the capri!
in this sun? couldnt say no, been iching to for a few days, id did wanna work on the mk1 but i have no idea what the old man is doing with the wiring loom
anyway, always thought the front end has too much white, especially as some have black lamp surrounds and grill, but i cant get the rusty screws out of the both lamp suroudns, so without snapping the surround, it will have to stay white
however i painted the grill satin black today...
in between doing that, i treated the areas my old man grinded out the rust, and kurusted them, so i wet and dried them back, and applied red oxide
this area needs quite some work yet
the big hole has been plated
rear arch too
the bigger picture
she does drive well, gets upto speed and through the gears, but sluggish still, plenty of missfiring
more to come soon, we want it Mot'd in the next few months

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, spares and cosmetic repair
some work has been done!
was bit bored today and had some good weather so i figured id fit the four branch we got for her at Ford Fair
i actually choose it from the 2 on sale, this one seemed to be a direct (as they come) fitment
so set about removing the old manifold, but run into trouble as i found the down pipe is welded to the mid section by some numpty in the past, so i had to then take the entire midsection off, but when doing so the back section wouldnt come free form the mid, and after a few knocks with the hammer the pipe out of the mid silencer snapped off...
so its going to need a replacement mid box now as well as the already ruined back section
im looking to buy a used mid section and perhaps a cherry bomb backbox for some exhaust note, unless something decent pops up cheap
as it stands now the four branch is fitted, but none of the rest of the system is on

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, MOT prep: Exhaust
my father brought home a nice little surprise for the capri today, im landed with it
a brand new sportex mid and rear section, £95 it cost which is a bargain i think
sod the rain i thought im fitting this
after some slaving around on the floor its on, needed to trim the unknown branded four branch down pipe a bit, as it pushed the midsection to close to the axle
crappy video of it running

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, MOT prep: Sportex Exhaust
as the carb is fecked on it, took it off, checked the diaphram as if its leaking it will cause starvation apparently, but it was fine, so though ill try a spare we have lieing around, seems like it come off a cvh or a crossflow? as the manifold certainly wasnt a pinto one, anyway its a 24/23 so far smaller than the 2.0 27/26
anyway popped it on, stil runs crap, so ill stip the 2.0 one down and clean the jets...
anyway done this also, bought spare headlamp covers from ebay thanks to the link from rsturbonutter, cheers man
so i can keep the white ones and still have the black i want
so sprayed in primer... ok its red oxide.. ha least they wont rust

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, MOT prep: Carb
got the capri back in the garage, to finish things off with it, began to spray the front valance in primer and a light coating of white
filler will need digging out soon
but mainly i stripped the original carburettor down for cleaning and reassembling, took it down to the core, cleaned every jet and screw with carb cleaner, checked all diaphrams, they seem ok minus one for the auto choke, but thats not in use atm so ill come back to that later
cleaned the old caked on gaskets and blew every hole with the air compressor
all put back together and compared to a 1.6 unit (23/24), next to the cleaned 2.0 (26/27)
runs far better, and after a play with the ignition timing revs very freely, right to 6,250 or there about
just need to set the idle as it stalls on tick over
