1985 Capri 2.0 Laser
Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
so 45s is best, only know that as they suit 2.0 zetecs perfectly too, so figures its the cc not engine specific
aye ill have a look for a manifold just to get an idea, old man has a mild steel one, silly bugger keeps painting it and it keeps burning it off lol, id wrap mine tbh
could very well be 32/36 mate, just remember seeing someones on ebay being 32/34... figured this be the same
cheers though mate helping me learn alot about these, which ill need if im going down the capri route lol, the forums for them are rubbish, old buggers use capris who dont bother with forums...
what about cam, what stage is best for normal road use but just for more kick?
and what about the gains where does a cam and full exhaust lie?

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
id get fr32 or fr33 cam fr32 is ideal for road use fr33 will maybe slightly lumpy, after fr33 you need different pistons (i think), and get single box ashley or similar, or get a nice stainless exhaust made up.
fr32 power band is 2500 - 7000 rpm
your not talking great bhp figures
but heres what i was informed and did
electric fan - 4bhp
electronic ignition - 5bhp
exhaust - 3bhp
cam - 5bhp
carb & k/n 5bhp
now i dont know how true those figures are they may be bull s**t i never got mine on the rollers, but i did all those mods, i also had the injection pinto head and cam (not a fr cam) and bearing mind mk5 cortinas are big/heavy cars it was running 16 second 1/4 mile at santapod.
the injection head is a good upgrade its flowed better, but its a baxtered getting the carb manifold to seal theres only a few mm along the top where the injectors were, i used sealer (just along the top edge) prone to air leaks if it doesnt seal,
its a myth that the injection cam is a upgrade to the standard cam though (if anyone trys telling you that) i used it purley because it came with the head.
id sugest the above mods and either a injection head or head work
or go zetec, its a different power (my opinion) id say zetec has more torque probally alot more top end too, but youll need all the bits to convert it to fit your capri, but its also a instant bhp upgrade about 130 straight off arnt they ?
loads of people tune pintos and get good power, but for really good power its money, as always lol

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
was wanting to fit a electric fan to the old mans, such an easy thing to do aswell... didnt realise it be that sorta power but i knew it would help, parasitic drag is the worst
would have thought a cam and exhaust do more
thanks though its good to know

i was supprised when told about the cam and exhaust bhp it may not be right, i cant even remember who gave me that info, i got the fan bhp difference from a engine building book, its just i made a note of those figures in the front of my cortina haynes manual so thats how i remember what i was told.

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
small update
spent and hour with the old man on it today
got the manifolds off ready to take the head off, got hold of a compression tester but it was only given with one plug and its far too small in thread, so will have to get the right one off his mate
ill ask at the garage i just began working for see if they have one to lend
some pictures to share
cant wait to spray the grill and light surrounds black, hate them being white, needs contrast
manifolds off
such a breeze to work on, i love the pinto engines already
only 1 exhaust stud give me trouble, and a clever design where the water enters the head through a galley in the inlet (between port 2 & 3) bit bad for keeping temps down but efficient design
timing and cam are marked up ready to retiming, will order a upper gasket set and head bolts wednesday, but would like to get the test done first just incase its the rings that are buggered, but im positive its the head gasket
if its the rings we will need to decide to repair or replace the engine

gotta love a mk3 capri.
i have had 2 of these as run arounds, both 2.0s models. great cars and good for having some tail end fun!!
such easy engines to work on when theres that much room in the bay of a capri!!

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
very true mate!
lil update!
ordered a Payden Pinto upper gasket set, mainly wanting the head gasket but the rest purely a profit, will definitely be needing the cam cover gasket too as this one is caked...
bargain price of £8.97
also ordered a set of head bolts, as they are a servicable part and replacing them apon removing is a must!, they come to just under £15 for the set
glad the cam doesnt need to come out first like a zetec does, but the cams cant be removed untill the head is clear of the bulkhead as the cams on the pinto slide out the back of the head... silly design indeed
will take the head off as tomorrow's job
clean the lot up in anticipation of the gasket andbolt set arriving around friday or saturday

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
thats a bit cheap for a full head gasket kit, id have gone for a more expensive make, only my opinion, you dont have to use new head bolts depends if they are stretch bolts.
The newer pinto engines with the torx head bolts have to have the bolts replaced everytime you have the head off. They arent that expensive.
The older engines used spline bolts, they can be reused.

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
well the parts arrived today pleasantly early, good old ebay
gasket set (turned out not to be Payden)
10x torq head stretch bolts
once down the garage i slipped the timing belt off (with thanks to the hanyes manual as i didn't have a clue where the tensioner was)
its clear to see the tensioner but not how to slacken it, haynes revealed you undo the 2 bolts behind the belt and it swings
10 bolts slackened later...
hard to tell if the gasket failed looking at it, some parts i can see seepage where its not in others, eg the water ways have spils under the gasket where other water ways dont
cleaned the head after that, wire brushing, moving the cam and valves, removed the spark plugs, wiping away debris and oil/water
the last owner (or before him) was a right cheap numpty, silicone sealer gasket was uses on the thermostat housing, no gasket present (white, can be seen in the upside down head pic above)
each 8 valves are in good condition, rockers seem fine, and so do the cam lobes
the 4th spark plug was a swine, embedded with determination! mallet better deep 21mm socket from a m ate were needed to get it out as it was rounding
also the inlet gasket was removed, was pretty caked on so took a bit of time and cleaning but its looking good now!
used the air compressor to clear all the debris and water from the head, and later the pistons
next i removed the thermostat housing, was pretty grotty, these are aluminium and have a habit of eroding away and they develop holes, i wonder if any one makes alloy/stainless replacements for these?...
anyway stripped it down and cleaned all the silicone off, the thermostat was looking ok, not 100% if it works, used pboiling water to test it but nothing, maybe pintos operated above boiling point?
the O-ring was f**cked, maybe he bodged it as the 'stat had failed?
(note the slice in the ring)
cleared the water from the crowns as we dont want that...
see here the bodged O-ring, 'stat has the new ring fitted from the gasket set and also the new housing gasket
painted the housing as black corroded white is not a good look
set come with new valve stem seals, old man reminds me he's got an old home made spring compressor somewhere, so i plan to do the seals and lap the valves back in, will have to pop to get some paste, think Halfords sell them?
and ill get some emery cloth too
so will have myself a reconditioned head
more to come tomorrow

oh, the timing belt is quite recent by previous owner before anyone suggests
and i noticed that the oil filter was stupidly loose, tightened it by hand, will be serviced once running anyway

I'm sure Burton Power sell ally thermostat housings. And it should say what the operating temperature is on the thermostat somewhere, most do.

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
on your 4th photo down, see the cam belt tensioner, you need to slacken the nut just above it and theres one just under/across the other side of the tensioner with a elongated hole, slacken that one too, sometimes they dont swing out of the way, just prize it across and nip it back up but it will take the tension out of the belt, youll never get the belt back on if you dont move the tensioner.
get a new theromstat too may as well while its in bits
id say that head gasket has seen better days
youre doing a good job

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
popped to halfords, got me some paste and stick, only had them as a pack so the stick we got has been retired
also some feeler gauges as we dont have any suitable ones i found that out when gapping my Si spark plugs, and i dont know if the tappets on the pinto require gapping or not! so got that anyway as they were cheap as with trade!
both come to £6, they were £4 each before trade
also since they didnt have a thermostart, so popped into my local motor factors who are nice genuine people, told her a 86 2.0 capri and she thought for a sec and told me the QH part number, cracking lady, shes been in the business for 45 years!
then had a chat about the capri and about her old Anglia's
anyway come to more than the standard price at halfords but saved me traveling to neaths store, besides im happy to give the lady my business over halfords!
forgot to get some emery cloth though!
ill manage with brushes and coarse sand paper
shall spend an hour or so taking the valves out later

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
sounds good stuff, sure you already know this, but mark the valves so you put them back where they were, ie same valve to the same valve guide
and one old skool way to check youve ground them in well, stand the head on its side, fill the ports with water, it shouldnt leak past a closed valve which is ground/seated properly

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
time to take the valves out!
how i got on today
cam follower adjusters need to be slacked off to removed the followers
this is done by using a 19mm on the bottom section, loosening it to the right as normal
then after its slackened off, you use a 15mm to loosen the top section, opposite lock
once that is done you need to pop this clip off
like so
and as long as the cam lobe is not resting on the follower (downwards facing) the follower can be removed easy
inlets done
all done
then naturally the next step is to remove the valves
so spring compressor
collets removed, spring and cup out, and valve dropped through
due to the end the bloody compressor broke so had to weld it back up
classy welds
hour later all the valves are out... none are bent, all are a bit grotty but only one stem seal was leaking slightly, others were oil free
the collection, all marked
next i removed the cam oil spray rail
note the spray jets
then drilled these out to 1.5mm
before left, 1.5mm right
done
back in place, decent pick of stripped down head, if only i had the dosh for a decent uprated cam
new valve stem oil seals in place
these needed alot of pressing, had to use a screw driver but in retrospect a small socket would have done better!
all done for tonight, not sure much will be done tomorrow as me and the old man are going to a car show/jumble in shepton mallet tomorrow, and we found 2 brand new valves and are contemplating weather to buy the other 6
even thinks he has new followers too!
this head is getting the works!

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
good stuff coming on nicely, i wouldnt have drilled the spray bar though, not sure why you did that, was there a small rubber seal between the spray bar and head (im talking about the centre section of the spray bar) dont loose it, ive seen people put the spray bar back on with out this and it leaks and affects the pressure of oil coming out of the spray bar ending in a dry cam lobe and a f**cked cam, also the same applys when you buy a new after market spray bar because they are either a crap fit or have no rubber seal with them or both the latter.
be carefull with the spray bar too the bend very easyilly and or snap, or if its bent out of place can catch on the cam.
keep up the good work

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
thanks for advice, its back in place now so no harm should come to it
old man recommended the drilling of the jets, said many do it as a way to get more flow of oil to the cam, its only about 0.5mm bigger and shouldn't cause any harm what so ever!

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
done some work on the head today, getting there now
only spent and hour and half as i got plans for valentines day :hsugh:
sprayed up a few things to spruce the bay up once back together!, nice satin black
engine lift eyes
cam cover
more on point, started polishing and cleaning the ports, combustion chambers and valves up
valve 1, exhaust
valve 2, inlet
cleaned up using emery cloth, then 320 wet and dry paper
lapping in using coarse, then fine grinding paste
i also spent a good effort cleaning the heads, ports and chambers using wire drill bits
valve 3, exhaust
other ports
more will be done tomorrow!
comments and advice welcome

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
Good stuff there, I'd be a teeny bit concerned about enlarging the holes on the spray bar as you'll increase flow but reduce rail pressure. Think about putting your thumb over the end of a hosepipe and you'll see what I mean.
Wish I'd taken photos of the golfs head mid-refurb, the valves were REALLY coked up - had to start off with a screwdriver rather than emery paper to clean them up!

Nothing to see here...

cheers andy!
wow sounds pretty coked up indeed, this was supprisingly clean, the pistons had a bit of coke on them but some wiped off when i was drying the coolant up
well the jet drilling is meant to be a widely used trick so it should be ok

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
found my old mk4 fiesta radiator fan switch earlier, meh you think? but its inline on the hose pipe!
so i have everything i need to fit an electric fan to the radiator
will either use an old mk3 Si fan or my fathers minorly damaged slimline fan, will take a better look at them see which is best suited, will fit it before the head goes back on for ease of access

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project
will be going on stand at singleton classic car show in may with steve my old man's mate, who is allowing the mk1 capri to be sprayed in his bigger garage
he owns this:
note the 3 spoke leather wheel, Fiesta RS turbo recaros and nice RS mats
and nice update on the mk1 itself!
sprayed in New forest Green (he believes, was old pot found in the stores)
fully laquered, 5 coats, needs to harden over the next 3 days and then will be flatted back and buffed
bonnet is in primer waiting satin black paint
let me know what you think, ill get decent pics with the camera once its out the garage!

Why aren't you spraying the bonnet the same colour as the rest of the car?

Re: 1986 Capri 2.0 Laser project, Mk1 update!!
more work done tonight on the mk3
all valves are in and springs on
lapping valves like a boss, with fast ford mag!
2 new exhaust valves
crowns de-coked, block mating surface cleaned
was fun trying to get pistons to TDC turning the key
all valves in
just the followers left now, spare valves...
tomorrow it should be put back on the block, just tappets a few gaskets, thermostat housing and head bolts left
considering stripping the carburettor down, as they need annual maintenance its likely due, and i have new seals and gaskets for it
comments welcome!
