Good to see you Saturday mate :)

I think I'm gonna go the same brake set up as you,

R888s are the tyres to have, but black wheels are the future

Once you have (Lukes) old hatch and my old bonnet fitted you will of saved at least another 10kg

After seeing your motor on Saturday has given me some much needed motivation to kick start my project again.

Speak soon

Likewise Shaun  - always a pleasure. I have to drag myself away all the time, I could chat all day about our cars :D

888's are the way forward, worth the extra £ i reckon. My brake setup is more than adequate at the moment. Hoping it will be more than 10kg saved, will need it once the extra steel goes in for the cage enhancements.

PM me ref that bonnet BTW, we'll negotiate a price so i can start putting some reddies away under the missus's nose

Bit of an update....

Drove it from Andover to Scotland.

Did a trackday at Knockhill

In car footage (1)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Fitted a 6 pole cut of switch.

Dash out...

Image

Jiggery pokery with some wires...

Image

Dash back in....

Image

This is a much better switch compared to the cheapy 2 pole version I had before so should prevent any battery drain plus, the engine actually cuts out now when the switch is turned off.

So, that was last week.

Today, I've had a couple of deliveries :D

Hmmmmmmm...............Carbon Fibre! Cheers Shaun :D

Image

It weighs feck all! Just need to fit it properly.

The other thing I got in the post this morning, fitted at lunchtime ;)

Image

Image

After fitting a quick release boss, I felt the dished wheel was too close so I decided to replace it with a flat one. I won this Mountney wheel, spankers on Ebay. Feels much more comfortable now.

Conveniently, this arrived too.

Image

I've been after one for a while. Got this for a tenner! Should stop it getting grubby when I'm not on track.

Just waiting on a 4 branch stainless exhaust manifold to arrive from Shaun ;)

I'd love a straight cut but they are silly money. Need an LSD for sure.

It's quite good actually. I reckon it would bite if you pushed it enough.

Very slippery in the wet, had a moment once or twice but I'm probably only 60% in the wet so wasnt too bad.

Some progress on the old girl. It's not doing any more trackdays this side of Herrick 14 so I'm spending some time tinkering in the meantime.

Note: This has been copied across from another forum, I’ve combined about 10 days worth into one post.

During a recent outing at Oulton Park, it developed a mysterious noise from the front wheels when either cornering or even turning slightly. It sounds like something rubbing or vibration. An inspection in the paddock couldn't identify the source so based on a post trackday bar talk diagnosis I'm stripping the front hubs down to have a look at the bearings.

The car as it is now, in the garage. This will be done in slow time.

Image

Image

Image

Before I crack on with that, I needed to remove the exhaust system first.

Image

Image

I purchased a Magnex 4-2-1 manifold from Shaun but it didn't match my current Magnex system so Shaun sold me the rest of his Magnex system too, the old one has just been sold on so a good result.

OEM manifold:

Image

Magnex SS 4-2-1:

Image

The manifold is going be wrapped first before I fit it, so I'll order some of that this weekend. I need to remove the starter and alternator to get the blighter on anyway.

Off to ebay to do some shopping.

Other jobs on the cards:

Clean the coilovers
Front bumper off, fit splitter
Rear bumper off, remove any surplus valance
General clean, de-rust and patch paint
Purchase and fit tow straps
Re-fit flush aero-catches to carbon bonnet
Order and fit some thicker battery cable
Fit the DIY quickshift that I've just received in the post today
Remove heavy OEM rad fan, purchase and fit a lighter one
Clean and paint wheels orange

I got some wrap for the manifold. I made an attempt at wrapping it the other night, with the wrap dry and the supplied ties. The ties are s**t and my arms and hands itched like a baxtered for the rest of the night.

So, I sent the missus to Screwfix to pick up some 40-60mm zinc coated jubilee clips. She got them today so I popped into the garage, donned some latex glvoes and took the wrap off. I then let it soak for 10 mins...

Image

I then set about wrapping 2 tubes at a time, which was a lot easier with it wet...

Image

Image

Then the 2 tubes down to the joint, this was trickier that it looked...

Image

I then tried to fit it. However, I had to take the starter and alternator off first. Fitted...

Image

and finally with the heat shield, inlet all back on.

Image

I've still got itchy arms though.

Rest of the exhaust to do tomorrow/over the weekend.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------

Todays task was to put the rest of the exhaust on. The replacement Magnex system has got a slightly larger tail pipe than the one I took off so I whipped the rear bumper off to trim the valance, whilst I was at I decided to see how much of the valance I could get rid of. Quite a bit actually. I've left the rear wing bits on so that the bumper has something to fix to around the sides....

Image

That's the after pic BTW. These are the bit's I've cut off...

Image

and with the bumper back on...

Image

Before fitting the rest of it I changed the gear stick & linkage for one that I got from some lad on here. It has been modified to give a shorter throw, it's no B&M (which are like rocking horse s**t and about £250+) but for £20 I ain't complaining.

The modified linkage is on the right.

Image

It was reconditioned when it was modified and it was never fitted so it feels pretty stiff too, the other one was pretty sloppy TBH. I may have to do some adjustments to the linkage later as the battery didn't have enough juice to fire it up and check that it went into the gears ok.

Once that was in, I proceeded to finish fitting the exhaust and put the lower strut brace back on, just need to tidy up the lambda sensor cable and it's job done.

I then finally got round to fitting the VR6 front splitter that I've had hanging around for about 2 years now. This is the finished article.

Image

Image

The joint in the middle isnt perfect but I don't care. I've had to cut a hole for the towing eye. It sits back from the splitter so the plan is to either weld on a longer one or fit a towing strop. This is the standard splitter that I pulled off so I could fit the VR6 one, it's quite heavy actually.

Image

Last job before I sacked it for the day was to remove the redundant bonnet catch. I've still got the cable to remove yet...

Image

Always stuff to do on this, more to follow in the week probably..

Postby Project_XR2i_Trackcar on Tue Jan 10, 2012 11:54 am

Time to dig this thread up. Just back from Afghanistan (again) and it's time for some winter tinkering. Well, I have got 5 weeks off...

I bagged a bargain on a brand new Stage 2 gearbox (Quaife LSD with stronger internals) whilst i was on tour.

My brother very kindly picked it up for me from the seller in Surrey, along with a spankers set of reconditioned drive shafts.

Image

So, with the RS 250 Cup on a SORN and tucked away in the other garage until the weather gets better the Fiesta is back at the house. First thing, bonnet off. Being carbon fibre made it so much easier, 60 second job.....

Image

That was the other night. Today I pulled my finger out and went out to do some prep. Bumper off, for ease of access

Image

Drive shafts are coming out, completely, so first thing was to get the nuts off at the hubs. This proved to be a sod as they were proper tight. I broke one of my extensions in the process

Image

I had to raise the car, take the wheels off, knock the centre caps off the wheels, punch the retainer thing out, put the wheels back on and lower the car so I could get the nuts undone. Then, raise the car as high as I could on 4 axle stands.

Both sides undone, calipers off, discs off and calipers zip tied up out of the way.

Image

Starter motor, manifold, lower strut brace and bulky fan all off. Need to buy a lighter fan.

Image

Image

I decided the easiest way to get the shafts out of the hubs was to drop the hubs down from the coilovers. They need cleaning anyway so they came off too.

Image

Image

I got this far and stopped for tea. My eldest boy (13) was helping me up to now and it was nice to have someone pass tools to me, although it took half of my tool box to get some mole grips.

The soaps came on the TV so I wondered out again. My initial plan was to pop the shafts and drain the oil from the box. I thought they would simply pop out but this isn't the case. I had a look at the Haynes and decided to call my dad for some advice (Old school Ford Mechanic). Turns out there is a clip on the spline and therefore some effort, or a crow bar is required to get them out. I therefore decided that as i was fitting new shafts I would remove the box with them still in and take them out later.

All sensors and earthing off, clutch cable removed. I supported the engine using some plywood cut to match the base of the sump and supported with one of my two jacks. I used the second jack to support the box under the cradle. Having undone all of the bolts between the engine and box I lowered each jack in turn until I could free the box from the engine and eventually get it out.

Bit fiddly, but out.

Image

Engine stropped up and supported on the jack and axle stand overnight.

Image

Image

More to come....

No, I don't. I have all of the documentation so I'll have a look.

Did a 2 hour stint in the garage last night.

Swapped everything over from the old box to the new one, cleaned the cradle and had an attempt at lifting the box up and onto to the engine on my own.

Job done.......

Image

T'was a right lick out mind.

Cradle back on and secured under its own mounts. Need to put the rest of it back together now.

Not planned but yeh, it'll be on track for sure.

Moving again soon, hopefully to Nottingham, 10 mins from donny and certainly a lot closer to more uk circuits than I am now.

Knockhill is ok, but too few trackdays and usually raining.
