2l maf

Postby devildamo on Wed Mar 23, 2005 9:16 pm

Finished my 2l conversion in my si this weekend and wow what a difference  .What i wanted to ask was i noticed in this months performance ford that heathers 2l fiesta on page 124 has no maff sensor :-? So off i toddled and unpluged mine, took it for a spin and i couldnt belive the difference in performance it pulled like a train all the way with no flat spots but for the first few miles kept cutting out when stopping, this soon cleared up and now its perfect. Is it ok to leave it unpluged? Why doesnt hers have a maf?

Thanks Damo :)

eventually, someone agrees with me
after much arguements elsewhere.
i have a 2ltr MAF sensor on mine, which is unplugged, and oh yes, it pulls like a train.

Depends on the ECU you are using, probably will pull like a train due to the amount of fuell being used

i'm not bothered about the economy of it, if it needs fuel it gets it. if i blow engine up, it gets a 2ltr put in, simple

To answer that - It depends on the management being used

If its just a 1.6 with the MAF not plugged in, see if you can remove it somehow - might add a bit more grunt to it?

I dont see how a car is gonna be faster with the maff not plugged in. IT tells the ecu how much air is coming in so that it can add the fuel accordinly. If its going faster when its unpluged that probably means its running really lean giving you the extra perfromance at a cost of it will probably det like f**k.

thats how i understand it anyways

probably is running slightly lean, but as far as i'm aware the ecu will take its readings from other sensors, such as lambda and fuel accordingly.

If it runs better without the MAF sensor, it would suggest to me that the sensor isn't working properly.

The ECU needs all sensors to work properly - they are there for a reason.

If its running lean then expect to see the pistons dropping out in little bits.

it works, and sounds nice, thats all that matters to me, not got mot for a while dont need to worry bout emissions. if engine goes pop, in goes 2ltr, simple as that

Someone should PM Rich and ask about it! Feature says it has an RS1800 ECU and 'custom loom'

If you unplug the MAF the ecu assumes the MAF has failed and does a rpm/throttle position calculation for load. Considering you are using the wrong ecu for the engine I expect that both fuelling and timing are well off the mark. Plugged or unplugged the ecu still won't be able to calculate the load correctly.

The poor running initially was the time taken for the adaptive strategy learning at closed loop, whilst this has a wide range at idle it won't be adequate at all rpm/load sites.

For those interested in a bit more try http://fordfuelinjection.com/index.php?p=26

reason it has a custom loom is probably cos it used to have a CVH in there

Maybe, But people usually just use an Si loom or something dont they?

Still doesnt explain about the lack of MAF!

I read this the other day and couldn't see how unplugging the MAF could help...

...so I tried it today...and.....no difference!

I think your MAF is probably broken, hence why it works better unplugged.
As for heather, she's probably unplugged the MAF because she's not using the 2.0L one and so doesn't want to confuse the ECU, correct me if I'm wrong....

As for jdfiesta, you are using the 2.0L MAF with 1.6 engine and ECU, so I'm guessing that if it was plugged in then it'd get itself confused, hence why it runs better without it plugged in.

:D
