For £350 your not gunna see much of a power gain - induction kit £60 ish - Exhaust (magnex etc-£260 ish) ,,total=£320- power gain approx 5-10 bhp
Or get hold of a 2.0 zetec lump/loom etc for about £400 and get your tools out - then you will need uprated brakes/suspensin and other stuff which means even more £££ - tuning ent cheap mate but it has to be done..

You wont turbo it for £350 even if you go for all second hand parts and stick with you management..
Cam kit is £400 which includes new followers (£270 if you just want the cams).
should be up to about 110 bhp with your other mods --- then you will want a chip (uni chip= £500)..again more money lol

like snakey said bst upgrade is to a 2.0 all u will need to upgrade si brakes if anything, altho i aint and it stops as well as it always has! so thats 250ish for an engine, and u could spend the 150 on cleaning it up and painting etc

yes they are to restrictive but by adding an exhaust, filter and cams you should see quit a good bhp increase - IMO you should be at approx 105-110 bhp..............(help if you loose the cat also)
NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO GO BIGGER CC 'S (even if it is the best mod for an si !!!)

ARGH!
This debate keeps going round and round. Look at the results of AdrianFRST's performance air filter and exhaust fitting session with Performance Ford for an example of the difficulties of doing anything to Ford's management systems. Ade gained a cool zero BHP and although your driveability may improve with the car, your overall power and torque figures will not go up by a Gnat's fart.
Why bother spending all that money? If you simply must do something radical without getting too oily, get a Unichip - at least that way when you do get an engine which has a decent head design, you'll be able to have the Unichip remapped for that one.

Nothing you can do to a 1600 Zetec bar forced induction or NOS will make a noticeable difference. You could spent nearly a grand on chip, filter, exhaust, cams etc and I doubt it would nudge 100bhp.
The limitions are the amount of air the head can flow with those tiny 26mm valves. the 1800 and 2000 are 32mm.
It may well be the most untunable engine on the planet!

Guys,
If the valves are the restriction would a head from either a 1.8 or 2.0 not fit? This would then remove that restriction and other tuning mods woukd make some difference?
Only a suggestion as I have no idea whether the head would fit!
Regards,
Stephen

yehh just like Guv said just Turbo The Zetec you can see 170bhp,
but you need to spend a lot of money for it but it's worth it,
i've seen my friend's Si and it's 210bhp with FRST Ecu, T3 Turbo, Forged LCP, Green Injectors, 12psi of boost and other modifications...
but one thing you need! MONEY

Sheesh. This argument again.
If i rememebr rightly the 1800 is a different bore to the 1.6 but has same stroke, making it more square and hence more revvy. It also has larger valves and ports. The 1800 head wont fit onto a 1.6 block properly.
You will end up spending so much money getting the same performance from a 1.6 as from a 2.0 it just aint worth it. Yes having a turbo is nice for the dump valve kudos, but talk to phil or any of the other tooleater owners. For bang per buck you cant beat a 2.0 conversion in an si.
You could rebuild a 2.0, balance it, use throttle bodies and aftermarket management and have one heckuva quick ride. Prolly quicker than the 210bhp 1.6 mentioned earlier and almost certainly more reliable as the engine would be under less stress.

That's all good and well, but when you take into account a set of throttle bodies and something like a Pectel P2 management will end up costing you about £2,000 + setting up.. and then you've got your head work to really benefit from it.. this route _seriousely_ adds up quickly..
some figures..
2.0 zetec £500 + fitting
throttle bodies + management £2,000
head mods £300+
you're soon looking at 3 grand.. sure.. it'd be quick.. you can quite easily get 200bhp from a 2.1 zetec with 45mm t/bodies.. but it's *very* cammy, not really ideal for driving around town.. expect your power band to go from 4k-8krpm..
turbocharging is the nicest option for general all-round driving, if you have the money.. in reality, it'll cost you about the same.. but what do you want, torque or bhp?.. it's a toss-up..

Okies, heres a thought then....
A 2.0 from a scrappy will cost about 350 quid I reckon. A service will cost another hundred or so (oil change, filters, coolant, TIMING BELT etc). All the bits you need to fit it can be nicked from the 1.6 (water pump, manifold etc). A superchip icon to remap the fuelling and ignition on the si ecu will cost around £225 fitted and mapped on a rolling road.
Grand total of around umm £675 so far - not including fitting which you could do yourself over a couple of days or a single day if you have access to ramps. The enigne will run and drive on the original map but it wont reach its full potential. Local garage here wanted 200 quid to do the swap which was really quite reasonable considering it was 2 blokes and a full day.
Looking under a grand so far to get up to frst / erst performace. I reckon that should kill a 206 gti or whatever it was.
Anyone else got any thoughts ?

Not THAT bad, still driveable but all the top end power seems to be missing, ask Phil Si.
Also having to eat words on superchip icon, it only does ignition timing. Still, a regular superchip will prolly sort it.

Cam Kit
The kent cams kit for the 1.6 Si gives 12bhp on a standard engine... so i'd think it would give 15-20bhp on your car with the free flow filter and exhaust...pushing about 115bhp!
Whenever you have doubts about whether to spend money on your car or on food 'cos your stomach is rumbling...remember...
