35mm or 60mm

Postby Escort Cos on Thu Nov 20, 2003 2:01 pm

Have been wondering for ages if to go for a 35mm or 60mm drop.

Can ppl tell me the bad points about both. I'll be running 15" wheels with 195/45/R15 tyres.

-35mm with 195/50 15's this way your rolling radius is bigger so they ARE actually bigger (if that makes sense) whereas 195/45's are same diameter as crappy 13inch steelies.

Anyway -35mm :)

mine is 35mm and I would say its the best option, also not mentioned above going past 35-40mm on standard shocks isn't good for them.

SI is -60+ on GMAX shocks and SPAX springs. 195/45/15 and arches cut out for 17s. 6ppl  in the car the other day and no scrubbing. Only problem was once everyone was in the car it was too low to shut the passenger door, it got stuck on the path :aaah:

2i is -40mm on GMAX shocks and springs with 195/45/15. Scrubbs with four ppl in the car

mines lowered 35mm on standard shocks, 195/50/15's and rears scrubb with no people in the car!! Only over sharp bump or speed hump too fast.

I get absolutley no scrubbage at the front under any condtions, cos i fitted a frst steering rack.

I have problems at back cos of me low offset (so they stick out a lot) even though i've ground about 3/4" off the wheel arches.

Do you think upgrading to gmax shortened shocks and springs (35mm) will help it ground out less at the back?

Thats 60mm on standard shocks, handling is a bit harsh at high speeds i mean 100 mph on tightish corners. So i would get a full suspension kit lowered 60mm. I am running 195/45/15

60mm all the way, it will be a bit harsh, but who cares when u can glide round corners & roundabouts as they were never there. Its also looks superb

60, as you'll lower it by 35 then think "I wished I'd have gone 60 now!"

Only ever had 2 problems with -60+

1 = Cant get up onto the MOT station. Had to make the slope more gradual :bonkers:

2 = Was following a tractor down a country lane at <5MPH and heard random scraping, so got out to have a look and chassis had literally 1mm clearance from the ground  Worse than that tho, it had caught on a cow turd and had dragged it all over the underside of the car  I blame it on Maff SI's fat arse being in the car :P Needless to say i wont be going down that road again :oooh:

-35

You think of all those times you have to get up a speedbump and think of the clearence you get

Mines around -35 on coilovers and I still hit the odd bump or kerb

That is true, and 17's means your car is higher off the ground which makes my point more valid.

depends what bumpers you have or are getting, Mine would easily go down to 60mm on the 1.1 bumpers, but I have animal bumpers to be fitted so 60mm on them would be a pain. So if you want bigger bumpers like animal/cossie on any big spliters then only go 35mm.

go 60 mate...especially if u want the car to handle like a go kart and DONT have bumpy roads where u live

then again, saying that, my Scirocco was lowered 105mm all round, sitting on 7.5"x15" rims with an et25 offset!!!! ;) :D no scrubbing whatsoever!! :D :D oh and i live probably in the worst area for bumps and dodgy roads  got stuck over speed bumps twice :x :x but thats not bad considering i can JUST about make it over most of them here

my car was originally 60mm on springs and scrubbed like a Bic™ everywhere and handled badly.

It is now on G-max 35mm shocks and springs with no scrubbage at all and handles well (although the front and rear strut braces probably make a big difference).

When it was lowered 60mm I took out the exhaust mid section on a bit of rough road. It broke into two parts!!!!!
