They usually go there remove the carpet and, if you're enthusiastic, the dash and sound deadening too - and it will give you better access. If you're doing any grinding inside the car (I tend to repair these bits from inside the car, as the rust can spread across a couple of hidden seams) make sure you tape card over the glass, as grinding sparks will ruin it.

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
yeah i took it back as much as i could from outside with a dremel , bit small for a grinder to get in there , but yes i also thought would be easier to get in from the inside when welding up from what i can see so far all the surrounding metal is okay , will update when the dash is off, looks all pretty solid though
how do you " keep " the metal plate in place that i want to weld into that hole , in place?
what i do realise is that i need to make the hole square to cut out a nice plate for it

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
Yes it looks pretty minor, you have a good shell there. The patch can be whatever shape you like as long as you can cut the corresponding shape in the shell Don't use any lap joints - cut a hole that the patch will sit in, as this limits any rust issues in the future. I tend to hold the patch in place with my hand and put a couple of tacks in it first.
The best long term protection is grease! After you've primed and painted lather the area in grease when finished and it won't come back.

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
thats right ive been using normal clear grease to protect the metal while its sat bare metal , i have been thinking about coating it with the same stuff afterwards , but my question in mind is ,will it just get washed away?

No it's great stuff, it will remain stuck in areas like sills etc. I've lathered behind the arch liners on my Si then injected box sections with Dinitrol.

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
i think the wings are not sitting flush with the doors is becasue the top corner that sits with the front pannel where wiper motor is etc , is theres a bit to much metal there , but i dont wan to cut that away and then be left with a funny shape or large gaps etc?

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
Excursion :xr2irhys :yep a fairly good fit , and you mean grind away where it bolts up ? yeah thought that area was the problem........ what about getting the swag line straight?
You need to raise the wing slightly, it's hanging a little low in your photos. The pattern wings will never fit 100% so it's a case of getting the best compromise overall.
I've fitted them in the past and had to make quite a few minor adjustments, including up near the scuttle panel and inside the wing near the a pillar. You can get a pretty convincing result with a bit of work.
Grind a little away at a time until you are happy with the fit.

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
still having problems with these wings
cant get them to line up as id like them to , also cut a bit away today to much and now left with a litle hole in top corner that going to need filling afterwards
in the pic u can see the top half has to much gap/curve
OR AM I JUST BEING A PERFECTIONIST?
also to get the front wing to line up on the front pannel , having to push the wing a little so its all lined up , which is pushing the wing outwards at the front

Unfortunately they will never be perfect, you need a genuine wing if you want it to be as good as it was.

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
The bottom usually sits in closer than the top on pattern wings.
This can definitely be improved upon:

Re: 37K Ford Fiesta
Looking good, I may have already said but primer is porous so don't leave it like that outside for more than a night. Put a coat of gloss black or something over the top, ideally some colour and lacquer.
I would chop out that patch on the sill and look how it is in there, as often the weld rust spreads to the inner sill.

Even the worst cars are OK under the tank
That tank is v good - they are galvanised as standard, do you want the car to look pretty underneath or are you just getting rid of rust?

I think the best method would be to use a sanding disc on your drill to remove the surface rust, then use hammerite to finish.
