What are the first things I should think about doing?
What things are actually WORTH doing and what is just a waste of time/money?
I hear air filters can be a waste, so should I save my money and go for a full through stainless steel exhaust system instead? If so which one?
As many ideas as possible please...

I've had the same thoughts mate. I have a K&N 57i filteron mine and it seems to clear a few flat spots. Also fitted a PSE power boost valve which feels nice on pull away.
I'm looking at getting a mongoose exhaust next but not 100% sure as the existing Ford exhaust sounds nice

I might whack a new back-box then (purely for cosmetic reasons if the standard exhaust is ok anyway) and then look at prices for head & cam work.
What sort of things would you suggest I look at doing?
Not bothered about insurance...(I just wont tell em! )

What HT racing do to get big power out of the EFI is to discarded the EFI head with a lean burn gas-flowed big valve head that is skimmed 160thou ( compession of 10.2:1 ) and machine scallops in the head to clear the injectors, Put RS turbo piston and crank in the standard block, Use a kent 27 cam with solid liffters and aluminium retainers, Machine the flywheel to reduce its mass and swap the manifold and keep the standard zorst to get 150BHP
