a bit of DIY suspension

Guys. I got a mk4 fez, 1996 Nreg, on 40kmiles.

I want to lower it by installing springs. Now considering I've never done any mechanics, the most advance things i've done to my fez is change the oil, put new sparks and replaced a splash sheild, I was wondering, is it easy to install springs myself?

I've got a Haynes and am looking to do it this sunday. I aint got the springs yet, but I was planning to remove and then put back together, one of the springs, purely just to find out how difficult this is. Can anyone advice me as to how difficult I might find this? Will the Haynes Manual be enuff?

Its easy enough mate, once you do one your set for the rest, if you no what i mean. Just make sure you folow the manual, study it the night before to you are set for the morinig. Oh and have yor got spring compressors? i looked at the book and though i could get away with using a vice thing, Dont because the spring is under enormous pressure, and one slip of the clamp and you could be hurt, Badly  Hope this helps
Chris.

Not sure whether you might have problems with those "single-use" kind of bolts with threadlock or similar on which should really be replaced after they have been removed, though I suppose thats just being anal :bonkers:

Along with spring compressors you might also find some axle stands handy to make sure the car is held up securely whilst your changing the suspension :aviator:

Where can I get spring compressors from and how much do they cost?

Can I get them from halfords?

Are they relatively straight forward to use?

think we got a pair for about a tenna. yes they are easy to use, they just well, compress the spring so use can remove it. my -60 springs didnt need compressing but the standard ones do. got them from a local motor parts shop.

Make sure you have a decent jack and some axle stands, decent set of tools with a breaker bar for realy tight bits (is a pain in the ass when you spend half the day trying to undo 1 bolt then round it off). always handy to have a mate with you. (you will probly end up lowering his car as well)

hope this helps
