ABS? or Up rated brakes FRONT + REAR?

Postby McGoo 69 on Fri Apr 27, 2007 4:53 pm

Right, recently had a accident in my 5door si  Brakes locked up and my car decided to make friends with the kurb bending my wishbone, bending the chassis and cracking the PAS rack

Now as the engine is burning oil ive decided to crap the car and swap my bits onto a new 3door and this time do it properly.

To avoid the same acident happening i want to add up rated discs to my new 3door. Front and rear.

What the best way to do this? i quite fancy cosworth brakes but how do i go about changing the rear drum to disc?

Also is there any way i could get ABS on my new car?

Any info would be great

Cossie brakes up front
Standard drums on the rear
Braided lines
Proper fluid
Quality tyres

Don't fit ABS, learn to be more observant. A lesson or two with an IAM instructor gives you a very quick wake up as to how poor your observation is.

wasnt that i wasnt opservent just locked up way to easy! been on the road as a motorcyclist and as everyone knows you have to be 110% alert on a bike.

It was just a eye opener that they locked up so easy...

How would i go about disc brakes on the rear?

id realy like to get some discs on the rear as i want my next si to be sweet, no cutting corners etc. want to aim to a near show std

Don't put discs on the back. They really are a cosmetic thing and conversions never work correctly unless you are prepared to fork out a load on a proper pedal box or bias valves. You will still end up with no or marginally better braking. My mate runs standard drums of the rear of his 400bhp Zetec Turbo Fiesta and if that doesn't need them then you don't.

Being a motorcyclist or not mate I still think you would find a lesson with an IAM instructor a real eye opener.

iirc the discs are 278mm and you need 4x4 discs and caliper (Sierra or Escort they are the same). The discs fit straight up and you just need to add some spacers to move the caliper out to line up properly.

When you say you locked up your brake what make's you think it was the brake's that were at fault? Sound's like the brakes did there job as the pads are there to stop your disc's from turning it's your tyres job to stop you from sliding along. When thing's like that happen it could be 2 thing's nasty tyres or late braking

hey mate you can fit rear discs for under £200 first you need a fiesta mk5 rear beam fits driectly to the standard rear of the car and more ridgid

tehn you can fit either 1.8 or 2.0 litre focus discs you'll need a new handbrake cable but im sure the scrappy wll know which you need worth it and nice mod gonna do mine some day but my cliffords first

And you are then left with a brake setup with too much bias to the rear which in turn ends up with the car spinning when you stamp on the brake pedal. You can put discs on the back for under £200 but they will not work properly

Even with Cossie kit up front the bias is still incorrect. The only way to make the set up work properly is to invest in a proper pedal box or bias valves

drums run much higher pressure than disks so the excessive prssure on the rear disks forces tham to lock uop worse than before, and resulting in a spin.

bias pedal boxes are about £350+ and the rest mostly

get the back drums refurbed and tightened up and theyl do more than enough braking

only about 20% of the braking is done by the back wheels so disks arnt really necessary on a car as light as a fiesta

just get cossies on the front and youl pull up in no time

Actually on FWD cars it can be as little as 10% of the cars braking being done by the back wheels.

It seems you have your heart set on rear discs for the sakes of it fella. Which is fine if that's what you want just don't be thinking you're doing yourself any favours

would fitting a brand new set of drums from an aftermarket comapny make a good difference or just best to just look after my same old drums and do stainless brake liens and if i fit front mondeo v6 brakes would this be ok to cope with a 2.0 zetec engine and would my lowered suspension need beefing up ?????? i really would liek to know gettin a cat1 alarm soon then get rid of my annoying door locks yaya and some indistinguished ruffians from my uni have run on my car and made dents !!!!!

Brakes locked up

Right, so now you want rear disc brakes that will actually INCREASE the chance of locking up and skidding?

:-?

Not sure whether the base models share theor back brakes with posher models or not as I've never owned a base model car. If they do differ it would be worth changing to th erear drum setup from the Si/XR/RS

It wouldnt hurt to get new drums and shoes for the rear. You can still get genuine Ford drums, i did from fordpartsuk.com

use the entire back axle then you can have the rear anti roll bar too.
