Actuator adjustment

I had to replace my actuator today old one was knackered. Got the car booked in at power engineering in a few weeks. Could anyone explain how to adjust the actuator|??, do u remove the arm from the wastgate, wind it and then put it back. OR leave the bar in place and wind the rod?? not a lot of room to do this.
