Advice time, need to lower my car which kit/set up for track

Postby Project_XR2i_Trackcar on Mon Sep 27, 2004 5:48 pm

Ok

I have a 1990 XR2i which is 90% ready for track use

last alteration before it goes on a track is the ride height.

As you can see from the pic below it is sitting incredibley high. (i thought these had sports suspension ? its probably due to the weight reduction.. i don't know ?)

The wheels fitted are 15's BTW.

As you can see, it needs lowering a considerable amount, i would say at least 2"

So.......what suspension set up for track use and how much £££ (new & 2nd hand)

I would imagine my budget to be around the £200 mark (supply only)

BTW, before i get offers, im not after a set just yet, i have new sills, clutch & CV joints to contend with this month.

cheers

Wow, good work. You've clearly lost a LOT of weight from it! ;)

Spax and Gmax are fairly standard "sports suspension" replacements for people on the road, and Spax often gets rated as "too stiff" for road use. As a result, I reckon Spax would be fairly handy on the track. See what other suggestions are, but unless you have the money for coilovers (ideal as you can sort out your ride height as required) then a stiffer aftermarket setup like Spax (-60mm at least probably) would work.

"fiestacollects" has some Spax available at a very reasonable £100 in Parts For Sale, might be worth asking him about them :)

its a bog std XR2i 8v engine with an induction kit.

As for 1/4 mile etc....i've no idea, its not being built for that anyway. i intend to use it for trackdays, nurburgring etc

Once i get used to the car and master the handling of it on track i will be looking into doing an engine transplant for more power - possibly a 2.0 zetec from a mondeo.

As for the springs, i will pass on your offer for now. ilike i said i havnt the spare cash this month with the clutch, welding etc, plus i think it needs more than a 30 mm drop.

True say.....

if you gonna around tracks like sliverstone and spa, you might aswell save a bit more and get coil overs, each track will require a certain setup for taking corners in and coil overs are youre best bet!

update us with youre progress....

Hi

I have Gmax on my si, I got them cos they're cheap, 4 dampers and springs for £200! The ride is a tad harsh but on smooth roads it's ok. If I were to do it all again I'd get coilovers:)

Good luck!

Gmax give a superb ride in my opinion. Firm, but not harsh at all. Try Spax if you wanna feel harsh! :o
