alternator fitting?

CVH and Zetec tuning, suspension and braking mods.

Postby ace on Sun Apr 07, 2002 2:20 pm

ive just fitted a reconditioned sported 1.3 cvh into my fiesta, it was a 1.1 but that engine was knackered so instead of another 1.1 i got me hands on a 1.3, not being the engine they fitted into a mk3 the alternator bracket must be different from the escort in which it origionated, because there is a water hose in its old position, could any body shed any light on how i would fit the alternator? :???:
oh and i wonder if any body could roughly tell me what power output i might get from this engine with these mods> twin choke webber, k and n filter, performance exhaust, a high lift cam, four branch manifold and ground and polished ports?
many thanks.

Hey there

sounds like your fez should go like a bomb and handle nicely too with a nice light engine.  I reckon it should be puttin out about 80bhp plus. Have u had the head gasflowed too? that and twin 40s would see u with about 100 bhp. The gasflowed head is almost essential for the cam tho to be honest.
The alt is engine specific i think. I fitted a 1.6 into my car at the weekend from a 1.1 and had a 2 month old alt on my 1.1. tried fittin that to the cvh but no joy. all i can suggest is finding out what alt your new engine should have and then get a new one from Halfords as they do £25 cashback if u bring your old one back to them. Can be from different models too, so u can get the £25 cashback by givin them your 1.1 alt.
PS, it wasn't that engine from somewhere in Crawley was it? i was well interested in that!

Cheers
Jon

yeah the head is gas flowed. i'll check out the alternator thing. would the bracket be the same as it was in an escort [ERRR] it all looks a little close.
the idea of fitting the engine was a spare of the moment thing, i didn't want to be drivin around in a standard car, whatsmore the 1.1 in it was clapped, and the 1.3 cost nothin (excluding reconditioning and tuning of course), i'll put some pics of it on the site when its done.
how much would it cost to stick the twin 40's on [ERRR] that sounds like a good idea to gain extra power from me little car.
cheers.

Wicked mate. ) but the twin webbers sound the nuts, tho they go out of tune quite easily and will only give ya about 140 miles to the tank if ur lucky! brilliant for trackdays and caning it but when around town and that could be a bit suspect. I think the alt of the 1.3 will fit as the 1.3 cvh was available in some fiestas, think it was some mk 2s and some mk 1s so i'm sure the bracket will fit somehow as there's more room in a mk3 engine bay than the mk1 and mk2. The twin 40s aren't hard to get hold of but the manifold to a 1.3 might be a right pain in the @rse to get hold of. Instead of that i'd try the performance upgrade from weber themselves which should give u a better fuel economy and better MPG. Try http://www.webcon.co.uk to find out which carb replaced urs as the performance upgrade and prices of it too. The twin 40s cost about £100 second hand, but as i said, the inlet manifold will be hard to get hold of.
hope this helps

Cheers

cheers for all ur help buddy  :Q
im definately gonna look into stickin in the twin 40's, 140 miles to the tank sounds efficient enough  for mei'll see if i can get hold of a scrap mk2 1.3 and get all the brackets and alternator off, i'll probably then take the alternator to good ol fords and do a part exchange (im an employee see).
is that pictures of your car below where you write? its pretty cool, i like the clear clusters i might get some meself, if my car looks as good as yours when its done i'll be pretty pleased, mine is getting re-sprayed because of the xr2i skirts that have been added, its dark metalic blue.
would you say that the 1.3 cvh is capable of developing more power than the 1.3hcs fitted to mk3's or have i pretty much wasted my time?
once again thanks for ur help
cheers

I know of a 1400 CVH that develops 140 bhp at around 9000 rpm.

The 1300 CVH is pretty tuneable, if not more for power per CC as it's a rich burn engine like the 2i, not a lean burn like the 1400 CVH.

If you're seriously interested in Tuning you could do worse than tracking down the Haynes CVH tuning manual. A local bookshop should have no problems ordering it in for you.
