amplify the 6x9s

Postby demolition_man on Thu Oct 18, 2007 5:39 pm

i'll start off by admitting that i know sweet FA about car audio... sorry :)

in my fiesta i have alpine speakers front and rear hooked up to the original wiring and i've just taken out my JL sub and a 2 channel kenwood amp, i don't want the sub in the boot anymore as it is a pain in the arse, however i would like to hook up a set of 6x9s to the amplifier, as i have been told it will give a better sound quality and volume.

so i hooked up the speakers to the left and right outputs on the amp, (contacts where the sub was previously bridged) and now all i get from the speakers is a crackly bass rumble and no actual music.

I think i might be being stupid here as it sounds just like a s**t subwoofer, as you would expect, but i expected it to play the normal music... so what can i do?

there are more contacts on the other side of the amp called "speaker level,,,something" but they don't do anything at all when connected up.

any advice would be greatly appreciated as i really have no clue about this at all.

thanks a lot

I am not expert earlier, but basically as the amp was connected to the sub is was set up to only give out that bass notes for the sub to play.

All you need to do is get the amp set up to play the music side of the songs. :)

For a start I would leave the rear speakers running off the headunit and use the amp to power the front speakers for a far far better sound. Whoever told you amping the 6x9's would give you better quality sound deserves a slap with a wet fish

It seems your amp is only playing bass frequencies. Look on the amp for a switch that will have LPF/HPF (Low Pass Filter - Only Bass frequencies played. High Pass Filter - Filters off bass frequencies playing mid and high range frequencies) on it. You need to switch the filter from LPF to either off or HPF.

If the amp is a bass specific amp you may not be able to shut the filter off. What is the amp you have?

its a kenwood KAC 528, it's old but it does the job for me. it has the option of "lpf" or "off" but it switching it doesn't make a great deal of difference so i guess this amp is intended for bass. never mind, thanks for your help :) by the way, i was told about better quality by a the guy in halfords, i guess i should have known better :D
