and now for braking!

Postby fiesta_fras on Mon Mar 10, 2003 11:44 am

at present:-

1.1 master cylidner, standard lines etc
FRST calipars on 285mm discs using spacers
FRST drums on rear

Problem, braking lacks bite and the pedal feel spongy even after fresh fluid etc.

Solution = just ordered a RS1800i Master cylinder from ford, comes with new rear bias valves and reservoir and seals etc, gonna get the servo sprayed when I fit this, along with this I am going to fit some ss lines i have to replace the rubber ones, this will all be topped off with some fresh super dot4 or dot5.1, any suggestions or pros and cons on fluids?

problem 2, big vibration throu the steer wheel at speed, I think this is down to poor quaility discs since they did it since fitted, will be fitting today some plain 240mm discs to see if my hubs are the problem or the discs.

If my hubs are ok then the next stage of the plans proceed which will probly be some cossie calipars and rs2k rear discs.

gonna stick to plain discs, drilled and grooved are way to OTT for a road car, i know they look better but this is the thing that stops you, personally Id rather have sharp brakes and a great pedal feel than 'brake style'

il report my findings :D

My experience.......

I had EBC grooved disks and Greenstuff pads..... I ditched the disks as they filled with brake dust making them useless! I then started using standard, vented disks with Greeenstuff pads, which i have now found the Greenstuff kevlar pads work at a high temp which the std disks cant cope and warp..............and they warp VERY easily!!

So, i am now going to use Mintex or Ferrodo pads with std disks........ will let u know how it goes.

looks like vibration has gone and the braking has more bite than with any grooved / drilled setups I have had in the past.

PLAIN DISCS ALL THE WAY :-)

fiesta_fras :FRST calipars on 285mm discs using spacers

Is this similar to Rally Design's conversion?

You want to shift the old brake setup chap? They should fit my (2i) calipers (IIRC they're the same as FRST ones), I'm looking for a brake upgrade. I don't have a monster engine so cossie stuff is a bit OTT for me, I think another 25mm of brake disc should help for now :) What size rims you have these under btw?

fras

i have 1.6 si master cylinder

i took all the linkage off gave it a clean and put it back n while engine was out

NEW brake lines all round goodridge braided hoses

had my cossie front calipers rebuilt (sent mine to burtons for £108 + VAT) they sent me some new ones back

i have a fiesta centre rear disk conversion using granada rear calipers normal disks and pads.

i have not changed the front rear brake balance but i find the rear end is easier to control it now brakes with the rest of the car (before i found when heavy braking round a corner in the wet the rear of the car would have a mind of its own)

i use mercedes brake fluid as fiesta boy nicked a load for me lol
