Anyone a electrician? If so advice needed please

Postby jayrs on Fri Mar 22, 2013 8:59 pm

Wanna run power to my shed, I estimate the cable run to be 20-22 meters from my main consumer unit, but wanna base it on 25 meters.

i plan to fit a consumer unit in the shed, things to be connected would be 2 strip lights in the shed, and a out door post light, a water feature will also be connected although this will more likely be via a plug rather than hard wired, same goes for led deck lights, there be plugged in not hard wired.
I would like 2/3 double sockets too, for general use

The main thing is, at some point I will bring a pillar drill over from the workshop, and maybe a small lathe, both would be classed as industrial machines rather than the stuff you buy from B&Q, (both single phase)

So my question is, for 25 meter run, and what I wanna run on it, what size armored cable will I need, what size breaker for the main consumer unit, and what would you recommend rating rise for the consumer unit I fit in the shed

I know a sparky needs to connect it to the main consumer unit, and I am a compatent person, I work with single and 3 phase within the refrigeration game so am not new to wiring etc, but I never get involved in working out what's needed and what not, I repair, replace and fit what I'm given to fit

Need a bit more info really jay first off , you don't need to connect to main c/unit, you could run a sub main , and what you got to be thinking of is the maximum amount of power eg wattage/amps your going to be running at any one time then you design
You would need a dedicated sub main to shed c/unit which could feed lights socketts ect, for the machines they would need their own individual supply at the rated power frow shed c/unit Give me a rough powder consumption and I can give you a better answer mate

Rich cheers dude.

I can't give you that info Mate as I don't have it.
The piller drill although industrial is std size and could run from a 13amp socket, I know that as I run one from a 13amp socket in the workshop, its makes a light flicker the second you fire it up though, but mig welder a do that too lol

As for the lathe it's a small myford, its currently running on 3phase, but if it ever does come over to my house it would be converted to run single phase, prob use a single phase motor from a old compressor, but as for figures on watts and amps I can't give them mate.

As for what would be used at any one time, erm 2 strips lights for sure as I don't have windows in the shed, prob radio plugged in, in winter maybe a convector heater and if I need to use the drill or lathe then that too.
If its evening time a couple of garden lights.

Ice been told 10mm armored would be enough, but that didn't come
From a sparky but from bother inlaw who works on constructions sites as that's what's used to rig there portable units up or something

10 mm will be sufficient but for the sake of maybe 20 notes I would use 16mm. Jay I am no electrician but deal with electrics but you could run a house on 10mm but bigger is better. Am rather drunk at the moment will give a more detailed reply tomorrow fella

Lol no worries dude

Yeah I would rather be over rates on the cable than under rated, I'm gunna call around next week and get some prices.
Just gotta work out what mcb for the main unit and what to use in the shed

It's higher than that fella,
Funny enough I looked on eBay this after noon as 16mm stuff, the one I looked at was like 90amp rating or something

To update this, I spoke to a mate last night who knows a sparky so he spoke to him for me, he has confirmed 10mm armored cable is what I need to run to the shed for what I wanna use, and will be more than enough for my needs.

I'm still interested to know what you guys fell on this though

One thing I didn't ask my mate is what mcb for the main consumer unit, doh lol

Looks like I gotta push my stuff in the for sale section to help pay for this cable, I knew it would be expensive, but I guess I'm out of touch with copper prices at the mo as I didn't think it was as expensive as it is

Yeah it's shockingly expensive mate. You might find that by hunting round some old industrial units you might be able to "win" enough to do the run. If you can't get SWA (or it's prohibitively expensive) you could always drop your own ducts in.
Nothing to see here...

Lol I like the way you think about old units lol but I don't think there be any I could look at....

Ducting aint a option tbh mate, cos I rent, I would have to fit armored as it could be checked, I gotta get permission also, which there give no problem as I asked, just gotta put it in writing but I know there state it has to be armored
