i put one on mine, all i have is a s/s backbox and a cone air filter and i noticed a big difference in acceleration at about 4,000rpm. sounds a bit nicer to. make sure you get some heatwrap or something similar [ERRR] it gets very hot and makes things like the starter motor stop working when there hot.

Without a proper flowing exhaust system and the fueling and ignition timing being optimised you are unlikely to notice anything major. However spending some pennies can yield nice results and when I did mine on my old XR2i it help me along to a nice healthy 130bhp.

Admittidly the exhaust did end up costing about £600 though

Gas flowed, polished and ported head with three step valve seats and bronze guides. Piper cam and vernier, Facet fuel pump, induction kit and chip. Think that was about it though. Was a cracking little car and the chip and induction kit live on in my mum's XR2i.

I found the Piper to be quite nice but you're best speaking to a few tuners to see what they recommend.
I woudl deffo say have a chat with Newman as they were unknown when I did mine and their cams are the business
