Been offered a 1.8 for free....
As above, a mate of a mate has written off his Escort GTi and says if I come and pick the engine then I can just have it.
But I wanted to get a 2.0. Should I be jumping at this chance? Or should I avoid temptation and get a 2.0 when it's time?
EDIT: Poop, only just seen that the GTi is the 115ps engine . Though If I were to get it now I'd have time to take it home, take it apart and rebuild it. Would the cost of getting the engine up to 130ps spec be more than a good 2.0? Or is it just not worth the hassle?

If the sump and bits are all the same, you could get it to swap all the bits over to the 2.0, without having to mess about with your 1.6 lump.
That way, you can keep your car on the road right up until the swap
Also, I can't see why you can't put 130ps cams in it, and may be the inlet manifold and throttle body (if they're not already the larger bore items).
If you don't want it, I'll have it
By the way, could always be good for spares (e.g. head) or if you want to rebuild the engine and learn a bit (if you're not too familiar with working on engines) - I know that's what I wouldn't mind doing myself

Yeah, I was thinking it would be fun to learn about the engine and rebuild it with some help.
I understand the idea of getting the cams, inlet, ecu etc... but would the cost of these items exceed the price of a good condition 2.0?
What about insurance aswell? People have said that they have abused a loop hole where they can say the engine is from a group 9 car and therefore should only bump up the ins. group up by one! I'm getting this engine from a group 13 car and if i made it up to the RS1800 spec then it'd be group 14! And if I was gonna be paying that much for insurance I'd want more than 120-30 bhp! (I wanna be able to keep up with my brother in law's 106 GTi)
Thanks for the reply btw Smo.

I don't know how the insurance side of these things work (I was actually going to phone my company today to ask some questions), but I think I'd want to do the 2.0 too.
The cost of getting them parts can vary so much. I wouldn't even know where to start giving an idea of price as you could probably get all the parts silly cheap at one scrappy, or be lucky on eBay, or you could pay the earth at either.
If the sump and stuff is the same as yours (I reckon it would be - you could probably tell be looking quite easily) then I'd definitely just get it for at least that, as that'll save you hassle when you do find a good 2.0.
