Black 3dr Cosworth - Engine in & underside restored - done
Re: Sierra 3dr Cosworth - Big update and 35psi
Thanks for the reply,
That is what I thought they were, I'm looking at getting some for my kit car.
How good are they on rear visibility?

Clarke i really don't advice buying one for an every day driver, it's not that they won't work as a well set up car will give you little problem (less than some RST's) it's the service side of things like on most cars it could be quiet expensive on the clutch, brake etc side of things. Just been reading up on the Recaro thread and
Right it's that time again - complete spec change again
First off is the Turbo - the Harvey Gibbs T38 .63 hybrid is coming off and a GT3076 internally gated unit is going on - this model is suited for 500+bhp
Got most of the fitting kit ordered
Oil restrictor - banjo water feeds - oil return - Grp A K&N & 102mm inlet hose
Next up is the Engine - The current engine is a standard 205 block with unknown internal sizes but was completely rebuilt in January 2008 covering just 2811 miles but with the car currently running 441bhp i can't risk it any further so i have sourced a 200 block bought in late 2009 and has only covered 500 miles before being stripped. The block has been machined and has 10 mountune stud converesion in it and has pocketed Cosworth racing pistons to match so a strong engine can be built from it.
Suspected engine block spec will be something like this but i will get a confirmed spec from the tuners but i'm wanting to build an engine that will take at least 550bhp as 500 is my aim.
Also i have been playing around with the spare rocker cover i had - got it blasted, then lightly etch primed and covered in black crackle/wrinkle paint, i have done this process before but this time got it under some heat lamps and the finish is pretty good from the can - the dull pictures are what it looks like to the eye, i was after a textured plastic finish and it's come out pretty close

Re: Black 3dr Cosworth - Turbo & bottom end changes
Looking good Chris. You might as well get H-Beam rods rather than shot peened. Shot peening will cost about £40 a rod anyway. The crackle looks good. I found putting 3 heavy coats on about 1 minute apart with a hairdryer/heatgun on hottest setting between coats and then untill the finish matts up then leave for about a week to harden. The wrinkle goes real tight and small.

Re: Black 3dr Cosworth - Turbo & bottom end changes
No chris is going the correct route now muz ,,, i was very tempted to shot peen my rods! but i decided my spec was needing H beams. I say to everyone a T38 is a s**t turbo you WILL feel a big difference on the GT30.... The peened rods can even be good for 600hp muz...
My engine is with MAD currently and awaiting the rods and pistons from America (should be in this week) so can't wait to get mine all hooked up and slap my Gt35 up... tbh my engine could do SERIOUS power but its not needed i built it for torque.. gonna get mine built and see how we get on maybe change the inlet after... but CHRIS defo the right direction!

Re: Black 3dr Cosworth - Turbo & bottom end changes
I've heard shot peened rods are ok, several people running them at 500 but TBH for the cost to do them, how cheap steel rods are in the grand schyme of things and the fact Chris doesn't do things by halves, not really worth it. Anway Adam, stop trolling and get building.

Re: Black 3dr Cosworth - Turbo & bottom end changes
Just sourcing a few bit's at the minute - but the grand plan is to take the car off the road for 2 years and rebuild it
I'm waiting on my mate sourcing parts for me as he's a breaker, just waiting for a late spec standard size crankshaft to come available then i can send it all off for machine work. I'm going to be using standard rods that will be lightened, balance and peened

Theirs always room for improvements Jay
Been really slow with this as we had our little one 4 weeks ago and she is taking up all our time, i was hoping to get the bottom end out last week but my mate who was helping and lending his equipment has got his missus knocked up too so a slight delay.
I have only managed to source a few parts 60mm radiator, MK Motorsport air injector bracket & Spec R breather system.
Just waiting for the Motorsport development xmas sale now for a Newman BD16 cam, double valve springs, uprated diff hanger, 83Ib injectors, live map inc closed loop, ALS & Launch control
More updates soon but i few pictures just before it came off the road

Re: Black 3dr Cosworth - engine out
I have been accumulating new and replacement parts all winter now and although my spec has changed slightly from building a fully blown motor i am continuing to use the rebuilt original engine as it's been spot on up to now so until it blows it's gonna get serious pain :gimpy:
I have chosen to keep it off the road for 2011 which means i can spent time putting it together properly and for it to be ready to jump in come the 1st April 2012.
This is what the car currently looks like
My Cylinder head has had some TLC - after an inspection one of the front water galleries has been repaired at some point in the past and i'm no expert but didn't look the best of jobs although it manage to handle over 400bhp, not being happy in refitting it like it was it's away at a local specialist having the whole section removed and re-welded and skimmed.
I was going to have a local company rebuild the head but as i have the time i think i'll get it cleaned and rebuild it myself ready for the new AB07 inlet cam which should work work well with the head as it's ported to 26mm all round.
Parts that have arrived ready -
Spec R - 5 port breather system - the catch tank needs to have one of the outlets removed from the rear and fitting in the front due to the strut brace fouling it. i seem to have grown a Aeroquip fetish :gimpy: so replaced all the slightly marked fitting with brand new and i'm going for the stealth black braided hose
Other parts are:-
4 pots calipers
Reyland fitting kit, bells, TRE's etc
MSD diff mount
MSD magnet oil plugs
More Roose hosing
Bailey swirl pot
Siemens 83Ib injectors
Garrett GT3076r turbo
102mm air filter
Airtec 60mm alloy radiator
Airtec twin fan setup
MSD water temp switch
Cometic top end gaskets
Wrinkle finish rocker (machined by MONSTER Dave )
Repainted manifold
Air injector bracket from MK Motorsport
New Goodridge brake hoses
Inline turbo oil filter
Once all this is finished and ready to roll it will be going off to Blackpool to see MSD for a map
The Start
The result of timing the car up to the V in the pulley and not the peg
Commandeered the downstairs utility room
The parts room which the missus is waiting to fit a new couch into
Removed the bottom end purely to remove the sump ready for big wing conversion
Nice workshop
The old girl still going after 25 years now on .5 overbore
Quick look around the block and it seems fine with no cracks, 2 of the 3 bolts that hold the alternater bracket are snapped off so they need to be removed at some point, the clutch is in surprisingly good condition the AP 6 paddle was fitted about 2k miles ago and was expecting it to be warn bad due to some of the over enthusiastic driving i do but it's absolutely fine and hardly touched, should do another 10 years+ by the looks of it but i'll throw a new release bearing in just for matter of course.
Sump was removed and sent to Doug (G19) for big wing conversion
Found all sorts in the sump pan and on the oil pump pick up, bit's of metal and silicon, the silicon stuff is what blocked my head the other year causing starvation to the exhaust side resulting in a snapped camshaft so i'm glad it's stripped and cleaned
Camshaft reminder from 2009
Sump removed
And returned back to me this morning
haven't got time to put it back together for a another couple of weeks but that gives me time to get the head cleaned and the valves removed and re lapped in.
The sump and new gated baffle well worth the money
Nice baffle
Steering rack.
Sick and tired of having issues with the rack i have opted for solid bushes and want to remove the standard cooling bar as it's not pretty and replace with a small cooler
Bargain buy £26.00 for the kit off the bay
The cam cover arrived back from 'MONSTER' Dave - looks awesome and to go for something different will look awesome under the bonnet
Dummy fit the air to air bracket
The breather system confused the hell out of me which way was best to plumb up but i am just fitting 1 to inlet side, 1 to the cam cover, 2 to the catch tank, and the return to the block on the ex side. Doug has welded a -10AN fitting to the exhaust wing on the sump if i ever change that.
Needs a new satin black powdercoat
Just started to buy more new bit's
I think i have sourced a Spec R header tank with sight glass to match the breather tank so that will get a coating of satin black to match.
Thats it for now -
I did get the head back after the rewelding work but had to return it due to one of the bolt's snapping in the rear water outlet so thats back tonight ready for it's strip down

Good work mate, I bet you're popular with the other half with all those bits scattered around the house
This is going to be rather special once finished
I missed you at Croft last year, It wasn't until the following day looking through some show pictures I saw your car there
Will you yourself be at any shows this year ?

you still not done that xr2 - all in good time though
Right done a little bit more today
Removed the steering rack from the car -
Removed these
Fitted these solid mounting bushes
Old track rod ends out and nice new REYLAND rose jointed item in
Can't really be bothered to paint it so it goes back in
The power steering pump will go off to the machine shop this week to have the oil feed fitting removed and tapped ready for the new fitting to help make room for the new inlet manifold
The cylinder head is all ready to be built back up with new parts but i am struggling getting the exhaust valves clean as they are thick with carbon, they have been in Mr Muscle for 3 days and they are still pitted any tips?
Hopefully i should have the top end built by next week ready to fit to the block. First i just need to remove the oil pump and fit the new 85Ib pressure release kit and then the sump can go back on and back in the car

Quite like the gold mate.
This is an imense car, I still remember when you build h196jne and being well impressed at your attention to detail, nothings changed here!
Engine looks lovely too, if you ever come to sell in the distant future, let me know!

Kind words, loved building the FRST's - JNE will always be a great car of mine as it's the car that got me back into the RS scene when i moved back to this county - what Shaun and the other owners have done to the car since has what it is today (to be honest i don't know where it is anymore - anyone from here????) but my last red one is the car i should have never sold
As for selling i can't see it unless something bad happens
