Blacktop 2.0 zetec

Postby :: blade :: on Tue Apr 10, 2007 9:50 am

hi all, just wonderin what will it take to fit a blacktop 2.0 to a fez Si, whats different from that to the silver top, as there are loads of blacktop and no silvertop 2.0 around my area,

so what would i need to do to fit a blacktop to a fiesta Si?

cheers

The "black top" is actually a nicer, more refined version of the "silver top" and in my opinion are worth the effort to fit due to silvertops becoming more scarce with sensible mileage etc.

The blacktop came with bigger valves and a better flowing head than the silver top, although this was done more for emissions than performance :( .

The main problems you will encounter are:

1. Water Pump: The blactop uses a completely different water pump to the silver top and the hole in the block where it fits into is MUCH smaller than that of the silver top, so you can't just swap to the rs1800 type pump as people do with the silver. :( . One option is to get the block machined to accept the earlier pump, you will then also need the earlier cam belt and tensioners as the blacktop ones will be in the way of the silvertop pump.

You can of course stick with the blacktop pump but be aware that it is driven by the "back" of the belt so you will need to make up a custom drive belt and tensioner system for this and will need a modified bottom radiator hose as the blacktop pump exits at a different height and angle to the silver top.

2. Engine mounts On the mk3.5 fiesta si/rs1800/xr2i models the front engine mount can be made to fit the blacktop block as some of the holes do line up, just be aware that the mounting block (big bit of metal that holds the alternator and PAS pump)will need trimming to clear the blacktop water pump if you are using that.

The rear engine mount WILL fit but ONLY after you have modified the small metal mounting plate (the one with the two bolt holes for the rear mount to fit to) by elongating two of the 3 holes where it fastens to the block. I think some other carefull "trimming" of the metal mount frame needs to be done too - it's been a while! :rolleyes:

You can keep the blacktop sump and I recommend fitting the fiesta/escort zetec flywheel and clutch too.

I used an RS1800 inlet manifold (although you can use the plastic one too) and throttle body, maf, ecu etc.

The Blacktop is a lovely engine and quite plentiful. They have lots of useable, smooth power and torque and so long as you can be bothered with a bit of messing about will be more than worth the hassle! :wink:

Hope that helps mate! :D

Yeah the ST170 is just a blacktop with a variable inlet cam, variable inlet manifold and some fancier headwork etc.

I fitted the ST170 engine, 6 speed 'box, loom, ecu etc all into my own RS1800 - See it in the member's gallery (although it's a few pages back now as I've not got anything new to say about it really, I'm just enjoying driving it! :Q )
