Common...Mine is very tempremental. Try cleaning all the contact terminals in the boot first then check the wiring inside the boot cover for loose connections.

Re: Boot release not working
As said already, clean the contact pins and plates first,
Other causes,
Bad earth, the boot earths via the hinges which go rusty after time and the earth becomes crap and can cause problems.
Dead boot popper (very common)
Faulty switch
Fault with ignition relay, this is the green relay, and as im sure people know with the amount I've said about these over the years, they get hot, go faulty, pins need cleaning from time to time etc, this relay feeds power to the boot popper via the central pin, check and clean that pin.
Chances are its likely to be a dead boot popper, as they can just go.
Good thing about that is, the popper it self, is the same sort used in after market Central locking kits, the connection on the end of the wire is different, but one from these kits can be used if needbe.
Best way to check it, if remove it from the tail gate and touch the correct live and earth wires directly to the car battery to see if it works, don't leave it on there, just touch to ensure it works or not, if it does, then check the boot wiring and earths.
I have assumed you have checked for blown fuses already.

Re: Boot release not working
I don't believe I have any boot poppers at the mo rob, I might poss still have 2 left over poppers from a after central locking kit I fitted to my xr2x but tbh, if I still have them, I wouldn't even know where to start looking for them, so I will have to say I have nothing mate
