Brake setup

Postby Monky on Wed Sep 29, 2004 10:26 am

Hi

Forgive me if i sound stupid but is there a way off setting up the brakes so you brake on the rear wheels. Im a be ditching the drums when the new car is here in spring to the best discs and pads i can get. Ive herd of people using bigger ford cars for this. So many i want to know if i can set up my brakes so the rear wheels brake, and what uprated brakes should i use for both front and back.

Thanks, Chris.

The rear wheels DO brake, but only about 10-15% or something. Discs may help a bit, but such a huge percentage of the braking is done at the front, increased braking power at the back wouldn't be as fruitful as spending the money on good brakes up front. Cosmetically-speaking they're much better than drums, but if you send to much braking force to the rear wheels you'll be spinning on every corner.

you could use r
rs turbo rear drum brakes, i think they are more powerful

if you want a rear disc set-up, you need a mk5 rear beam

if you uprate the rear of the car and not the front you will swap ends every time you touch the break! effectivly making the car not only undriveable but very very unsafe not only for you but every other road user!

why do you think performance cars have large front breaks and small rear ones!

Yeah but i want to have uprated front and rear discs and pads. So if i have uprated front discs and pads at the front, and a zetec s rear beem with the origional discs and pads on it, will that be good?

Ive now discoved that braking on the rear is stupid, but i still want no drums on the back. What car would i get my front setup from?

Having uprated front brake pads and discs is not enough. To be safe I would suggest you go at least one size lager at the front if not more

i.e. a good match for 240mm disc brakes on the back is 260mm or better yet 280mm front discs. Uprated brake pads and discs even better.

What xrsi is 100% true and you need to listen. I would recommend getting Mondeo V6 front brakes (280mm) or Focus ST170 front discs (300mm)

Erm, i think getting the focus for the front would be a good idea, and mk5 for the back. I wasent going to just uprate the back. Do you think this is a good setup, i want something big on the front :)

That's a very good setup!

You may well find you need to uprate your brake cylinder and servo to a Escort item however. When I did this I used a MK5 brake cylinder and servo from a 1.6 non ABS Escort.

Good luck with that

If your looking for discs on the back I would advise you to plumb in a bias valve so you can adjust the braking pressure on the back to avoid any mishaps. You can then brake balance (front/rear) near spot on.
