Breather pot & vacuum hose

Problem or technical question?

Breather pot & vacuum hose

Postby Jimmykey on Sat Mar 01, 2014 6:26 pm

I had my breather pot off today to check it out a little further after me and Tiller off here thought it looked odd. Mine is an Auto Specialist pot so has one more inlet/outlet compared to the Bailey one. I have both rocker covers running to the pot and then the crankcase hose running straight into the bottom of the pot. I think the difference with the bailey one is the right hand rocker cover and crankcase share one hose with a t piece to the breather pot. (I will upload some pics when photobucket is working again!). My vent runs to the underside of the car.

My question is do you need the vacuum hose that is normally connected to the breather pot? Mine is blanked off but the car has been running fine for the past 4 years like this (previous owners set it up like this). This means the extra inlet/outlet on the pot is also blanked off.

Cheers!

That's what I'm missing. Where I see others people bays with a one way valve going to the breather pot my hose that your referring to is blanked off

Well,since the small tube that goes to the inlet manifold is used to create vacuum to assist fumes scavenging from the crankase,you must use a one way valve.Otherwise,when under boost,it will pressurize the pot and at the same time the crankase.Not good for the seals of the engine and the running of it in general...so you must use one to let air go from the pot to the manifold but not vice versa.

Thanks mate. Now I just need to get a non return valve! I've put up a wanted thread. Will the aluminium ones on eBay work fine (that's all I can find). The original ford triangular ones look like the air should go the other way if that makes sense?

Think I've just figured out the answer to my own question about the valve direction. As it's a vacuum it sucks air in so opens the valve towards the crankcase? Is that right? Just need a non return valve and some hose now!

Not sure of the aluminium ones.I guess if they are designed on for use with fuel will suit,since the vacuum on the manifold is mixed with fuel.I don't know if it can withstand the conditions.Ford triangular ones are like an arrow,you place them in the direction you want the air to pass.It must show the direction if you get me.You need the fumes from the crankase go to the manifold.So think like air is drawn from the crankase to the rocker cover and from there to the pot and then to the inlet manifold.So,the arrow must show towards the manifold.

That makes sense. I did get a little confused saying it would go to the crankcase. Does anyone know if you can still buy the ford valves?

What are people experiences with GRS oil breathers (link below);

I've seen people saying Bailey ones are not brilliant. I think the one I've got needs to go!
