Re: calling all scottish owners
I've gone off AVA. If you want the car ran on the rollers for cheap and the fueling checked then no problem, £60 and you'll get a good deal. But they don't seem to know much about EFI rs turbos. I took mine there had it set up and checked for detonation, had seriously bad fuel economy, took it back and they could offer no solution, apart from that it was maybe running a bit too lean and so was requiring more throttle to get the required power out of it, and charged me another £60 for the privilege. I wouldn't have minded that there was no solution to offer, but to be charged twice... well......... As it turns out the solution is that the EEC-IV is tug.
I later bought my own wideband (which was the same cost as the two session at AVA) and discovered the car was running richer than it should (after me turning it back down a half turn on the regulator that AVA had turned it up). This didnt make much of an improvement to fuel economy when driving about town, but did make it run a fair bit less rich on the over run and at idle so must have made some difference though I'd be lying if I said I measured it. The car is still as powerful as it was when it was at their setting.
I wont be going back, but thats also because I live 450 miles away now
JAmes.

So to recap, you tried to tune your own engine for fuel economy, but failed ..... or maybe you didnt ? but you never tested ? so you female provider of 'horizontal refreshment' off AVA ? after they more than likely told you that, yes you do have a problem but it will need more investigation, rather than just a check up run on the rollers and can i ask where you bought the wideband ? ...... please dont say Halfords!
Paying £60 an hour for a tuner is quite reasonable if you ask me ..... or maybe im wrong ?
In all the years of FRST ownership and trying numerous tuners and so called "experts", its has only been AVA that have been trustworthy and actually knew what they were doing. 154,000miles+ on original T2 running stage1 should be evidence enough. I know the problems Ford EFi can give, as it took me ages to sort out a stuttering problem, with 3 ..... yes 3 garages failing to fix it!
Allan and the guys will give genuine advice, but dont go there for a check up run on the rollers and expect them to drop everything because it ends up your car is not running right. There is also Sitech racing in Blair Athol, of which i have heard some good things.
