camber and toe on rear wheels

Postby xrsi on Mon Nov 14, 2005 11:47 pm

what effect does camber and toe have on rear wheels?

doing independant rear suspension for my final year project and would like to be able to incorperate some sort of adjustment into the designs.

if i can use 2 points to adjust camber then i can also adjust the toe by using the same points in theory with careful design and thought.

just wandering if there is any use in working it into the final model.

You need to be using books for your final year project James, not FT.com!

llama! If you can't be bothered to read about it, then just don't put it into your project, don't resort to FT knowledge! You'll get someone like Mr "I paid an extra £20 to have my tyres inflated with nitrous oxide" replying to your queries!

I'm mapping a 1.6 Ford Sigma (Zetec S Zetec) engine on a MoTeC M4 ECU and a Megasquirt setup. I'm mostly just wanting to learn how to map an engine successfully, but the project itself should be a good one, comparing top end management with budget DIY stuff. I've been playing with the MoTeC software recently and Megasquirt research has begun. Will be talking through MoTeC mapping with my lecturer next week, then hopefully hooking up the engine on the dyno the week after then kicking it all off :D

I aim to have my own mapping station within 5 years of leaving uni, using a dyno most probably, but possibly offering live mapping too, and a rolling road would be nice too. I'll see how it's all looking nearer the time, but I know the sort of money that can be made in mapping, and TBH I'm a pretty materialistic person, so that is my aim, make money and buy fancy things and allow myself to do all the things I'd like to as a result :)

well we have a knackered westfield (that has been fixed and broke more times than my fiesta has) a load of formular fords that are never in one piece, and a low cost kit car that has been just the chassis since i started there 4 years ago when i was doing computing!

oh and the brand new, fully loaded un-registered jag x-type v6 that is not even road legal..... and best bit is we aint alowed to touch it!

we have great stuff in our uni! honest!

james - hope the project goes well, sounds a very sensible one to do and should be intersting for both you and people who will get to read it!

You have no idea how closely that description resembles our race workshop! Four Formula Fords, usually in bits, one nice Formula Student car which we'll be testing in, and a crap FS car that's being stripped. Oh, and a Locost which has been a chassis since I started two years ago  No Jag here though :( We had an Escort Cosworth at Loughborough :D Was eventually hooked up to a Sony rally simulation, wired up to the steering wheel, pedals and handbrake etc! :D Was very good fun!

I think the project should be a good one, just need to get some proper work done on it :x Have you done much on yours yet James?

Pez - I know what you mean. My uni isn't THAT well-equipped (previous uni, Loughborough, has a wind tunnel or two, several very smart engine test cells, flow benches, lots of very good test facilities etc) but well-equipped enough I hope for me to learn what I would like to be my trade :)
