If you fit a performance cam am i right in thinking that it's also advisable to strenghten the bottom end ? ? ?

If so what actually needs to be done to it ? ? ? and would you advise uprating anything else? ? ?

[ERRR] i haven't got a clue :???: :???: :???: :???:

nah m8, everything should be kool just by fitting a cam....all that the cam will do is keep the valves open longer therefore chuck in more petrol and air hence more power....the bottom end aint gonna get harmed at all

what cam u thinking of getting?

Andy - I would definately make sure your bottom end is ok first.

I've had a new cam & lifters on two of my cars - both of them ran sweet for the first couple of months then after a few raggin's the bottom end went on both of them

Yeah serious bassboy. It happened on my 1600 cvh & my 1600 cvh efi. My mate had it happen to his aswell. The thing is my mates dad gets new cams & lifters from work on the cheap so a lot of us have replaced ours but if you hammer your car the bottom end goes easily unless it's it top notch condition. Don't know why but it's happened many a time! :???:

Yeah mate, if your putting a wild cam in, it's better to have the bottom end worked. This is because you move the peak power of the car up the rev range to about 6400 (with my piper 285 cam) So the car will spend more of it's time around this rpm, which is not good for a bottom end.

But saying this, I ran my car with a cam for over a year and never blew the bottom end, just take it sensible.

I fitted the Piper T2 cam, and a week later my bottom end is going, but i dont think it is done to the cam, it was just speeded up by the cam... cause it was losing power a while before..

So as mentioned the cam quickened the bottom end blow up..

obviously, no matter what u do to the engine, it will shorten its life...especially performance wise...but like i said, weve never had a problem or a come back...all the cams and bottom ends are still going strong even over a year down the line

A cam, as we all know, makes the valves stay open longer, which allows more air and fuel to enter the cylinder.
This results in a bigger BANG in the cylinder which gives you more power.
But this bigger bang obviously makes more stress for the pistons, conrods etc.... so putting a "lumpy" cam in to a high mileage car is probably not a good idea. My car had done 104k when i had the head, cam etc done....but i only put a "mild" cam in so i hopefully didn't get problems and so far it has worked

i would have to say the cam...just as long as u have done all the other bits...e.g exhaust, air filter, possibly a chip...u could also change the throttle bodies for a bigger one
