Can I install an oil cooler on a FRST???

Postby Big JN on Mon Dec 11, 2006 10:22 pm

Just wondering if it's possible to install an oil cooler without to much effort!:-?

Have a 3 dl Oil cooler from a Mitsubishi Colt GTi -90 lying around and thought that because of the overheating problems with the FRST it would be nice if I could install this!!! :Q

FRST's have a heat exchanger already. i cant see your really going to help overheating difficulties by fitting an oil cooler but you'd probably help by fitting an uprated radiator or alternativly and some say that the XR2i radiator is good enough. works fine for me anyhow :bonkers: try the search facility as i seem to remeber that somone had fitted a oil cooler to thier FRST a little while back. it may shed a bit more light on your question :)

OK thanks for your answer!!!! :)

The reason for asking is that I have a XR2i that's going to be converted to a RST and it doesn't have a heat exchanger and instead i want to install the Oil Cooler! Sorry forgot write this in my Question!!!

The reason for this is I've driven my Colt GTi allmost without water (by accident) and the temperature just rose a little!!!!
It's very effective to cooldown the engine from inside and with a turbo wich increase the temperature of the oil I figured that this would work perfectly!?

But I'm not sure and i will use the search engine to see if I find anything about it!!! Thanks once moore

I don't know much about the FRST because it was never sold in Sweden:( so it's hard to for me find out anything about the FRST here so thats why I joined this excellent forum!!!
I believe there is only 2 or 3 FRST in sweden and they are all private imports!!!!!

They cost from 2300£ to 4500£ It's to much for me
I bought my XR2i for 450£ usually the cost about 1500£.
It was "cheap" because it was smashed in the front after a collision!
But nothing to worry about except it didn't pass the MOT! :P

the reason your colt temp never really went up is it needs water to run on the sensor to tell temp, and if you have no water, it aint gunna read right
anyhow, thats not the question.
the oil cooler fitted from standard is a water cooled one, it fits between the block and the oil filter, and some xr2i did in fact come with this, but there is one for sale on this forum if you want to go this route, but some water pipes need changing to plumb it in, but this is easy done as there available from fords

and here it is

http://www.fiestaturbo.com/forums/fiest ... -vt141849/

the oil cooler you have in mind can also be fitted and if its what i think, it can be fitted very easy, all you need is a sandwich plate that sits between block and oil filter that has 2 take offs for the oil pipes.
however, it is in some cases recommended to fit a theromostate inline co the oil isnt being cooled before it has a chance to warm up.

the sort of spacer block you would need is this sort

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOCAL-OIL-COOLER- ... 0068082069

then its just a case of having hoses made up to suit the lenth needed, unless you have some that it
