Changing old brake pads

Postby F.U.K FESTA on Tue Mar 08, 2005 5:33 pm

ive check the guides section and couldnt find one for changing old brake pads, is it a simple job to fit new brake pads? or is it a dodgy area to be fiddling with??

Front brake pads on Fiesta's are a piece of cake. Do all the usual safety stuff with jacks and axle stands and all that. You want a 7mm Allen key, Draper do a special item for the job, get one from your local motor factors. Go for the caliper mounting bolts, the bolts that mount it to the carrier, not to the stub axle, and remove. You may only have to remove one, depending on model and age, i cant remember. Remove the pads, and (with the brake fluid reservoir cap off) push the piston back into the caliper with a clamp and a black of wood. Slip in new pads with a bit of copaslip on the BACKS to prevents squeal, refit caliper to mount and tighten bolts. The bolts should only be as tight as you can take them with that allen key, you dont need to put a scaffold pipe on or anything. Then do the other side, check your level, settle the pads in by pressing the brake a few times. Wheels back on etc etc etc. Double check you have tightened everything and topped up the fluid, take her for a run out, being gentle and see how she is. Should be grand now.

The allen keys cost a couple of quid from the motor factors, the bolts are usually quite tight so you would have trouble doing them with a normal allen key.

Make sure you note how the springy thing goes back on before you ping it off!
