changing strut top mounts?!?

Problem or technical question?

Postby festajon on Wed Dec 05, 2001 7:28 pm

Right i've got a rough idea of how u do this but doesn't actually explain it by itself in haynes. This is what i reckon:

1.Jackup the front side of the car u wanna change the strut top on.
2.take off strut mount platic cap
3.undo the nut while holding an allen key in the top to prevent the piston rod from turning
4.keep going....
5.then take the strut top mount off

just to make it Haynes like:

Refitting is just a reverse of removal!

Is this right?!? Al? anyone!!

How much are the new strut top mounts new from Ford?

Dong!!!

Undo the strup top nut first, keep it on finger tight for now
Loosen wheel nuts
Jack car up. Axle stands in
Remove wheel
Undo shock to hub body nut and remove
Disconnect brake hose from it's pincher in the shock body
Remove shock from hub. If stuck on solid, undo brake caliper (2 x 17mm nuts behind disk) and remove, then remove brake disk. Note these don't need to be screwed on when you put it back together.
Stamping on hub carrier works for me, although I'm bound to get bollocked for saying that. Mallets tend to work too, as does WD40 and patience
Hold shock body with one hand - undo top nut with other. Drop shock out.
Push rubber out. Compare with new one. Laugh heartily. Wonder how wheels haven't already fallen off.

Put back together.
Place small collection of important looking nuts which are now left over in tray with all the others you have collected

so it's you we have to blame for all the 'unbolt hub and pull downwards'
when it actually means 'unbolt hub, slip off head of bolt, spray WD40 wait for 10mins, try to undo again, scrape knuckels on brake disk as spanner slips off, try again - finally undo. hit hub with 5lb hammer for 10mins until it shifts' !!!

and what about the 're-fitting is the reverse of removal' !!!

*painfull memories of removing hubs, driveshafts and suspension*

I think the Haynes series should come with "the haynes manual plain english decoder".. hehe

They should do electronic versions with movies, pictures make more sense.. hehe

No, the hub will sit on the bottom ball joint. Just the track rod end to remove from the hub to save your tracking!
